Welcome back to Awakened Exchanges! I’m your host Jay Rich and this is our first real episode of 2021! I don’t have any theme for this month other than a fresh start for the new year, but I hope that it’s starting off better than 2020 ended for most. I wanted to at least give a little attention to what happened at the Capitol building in D.C. last week. Wednesday January 6th was the day that congress was set to certify the Electoral College results. Personally, I thought that was going to be plenty of drama for the day, as there were still republicans trying to push the “Stop the Steal” rhetoric and planning on opposing the results, despite months of court cases showing zero evidence, even in Red states. Sadly, the Q-Anon faction is truly sucked into these conspiratorial beliefs that are threatening to lead us to a very different kind of civil war. Despite police insistence that they’d “heard nothing,” related to storming the capitol, social media posts, as well as messages on Pro-Trump message boards contain explicit planning for just such a breach. On December 23rd, Trump tweeted - “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!” This is far from the first time that Trump has incited protests during his presidency. Telling the Proud Boys to “Stand By,” during the elections played right into this narrative as well. It’s like Trump was saying “Are you waiting to do something? Here’s your chance!” I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of being looked at as an enemy to the right, just because I think all people should be cared about. I’m not trying to turn this into a communist country. I don’t want Gulags in America; we’re already incarcerating too many people. I don’t know that there is a single way to get through to people that would work for everyone. That said, is it too much to ask that people think things through? Is it too hard to truly do unto others as you would truly have them do unto you? Maybe if we were all present in the moment, we could get through this with our civility intact. I truly hope it’s not too late for that.
That’s probably enough politics to start the show this week, but I want to thank this week’s guest Crystal White. I’ve only known Crystal for just a few months now, but her bravery and openness should be a beacon of light for others. Crystal is working on a book about her transition from Dave to Crystal, encompassing battles with addiction and mental health before finding a healthier path through life. We talk a bit about plant medicines and the role that cannabis played in eliminating her skin cancer. I suspect that Crystal will have to join us again for some more in depth discussions on different types of mushrooms and their medicinal properties as well.
