Jesus says that you will know people by their fruits (Matt 7:15–20). In those days, he was speaking to Jews who were conditioned to view their religious leaders as spiritually mature, while Jesus would criticize their clean outer appearances that disguise their dead hearts (Matt 23:27). If we want to ensure that we are walking in the fullness of the Holy Spirit, what fruit should we expect to see in our lives?

In this week’s episode of the Biblical Counseling Podcast, pastor Jeff Christianson continues his study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. This week he discusses the fruit produced by the fullness of the Holy Spirit. In Scripture, we see a symbiotic relationship between the gifts of the Spirit and the fruits of the Spirit. Pastor Jeff looks at two passages of Scripture that explore the nature of spiritual gifts and spiritual fruit.

To explain spiritual gifts, pastor Jeff takes his listeners to 1 Corinthians 12 where Paul instructs the church at Corinth on spiritual gifts. By spiritual gifts, Paul means distinct abilities that are given by the Holy Spirit to individual Christians for the purpose of ministry and the edification of the church. In verse 4, Paul tells the Corinthians that there are a variety of gifts.
