In Boxing: The Algerian female boxer at the centre of a gender controversy at the Paris Olympic Games, Imane Khelif, was born female in 1999 and has been representing Algeria as a female boxer at many international boxing competitions since 2018, including the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where she lost her second round fight to eventual gold medal winner, Kellie Hetherington of Ireland.
In fact, Khelif has lost half a dozen fights to various female opponents in her career, but she has steadily improved through dedicated training.
She previously competed at several International Boxing Association tournaments without any issues, until the 2023 event in India, where she was abruptly disqualified after beating Russian boxer Azalia Ameneva.
The IBA is controlled by Russia and has been banned from the Olympic Games since 2019 for a lack of transparency and governance issues.
Khelif, a welterweight, and Lin Yu-ting, a featherweight from Taiwan, who is also assured of a medal, are competing in Paris despite the IBA claiming that they failed to meet their gender eligibility rules last year.
The IOC has described the tests undertaken on Khelif and Lin by the IBA as lacking credibility.
And that’s a wrap!
