Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 38 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Thursday morning 08 August 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent, where it is mostly cloudy and 20 degrees Celsius again at 5am.
And at the Paris Olympic Games; India’s wrestling star at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat has sensationally failed to make weight for the Women’s 50Kg final yesterday and been disqualified.
Phogat, 29, has been in the public eye in India for months as part of a long-running protest against the former Chairman of Indian wrestling, who was embroiled in a sexual harassment scandal.
She was due to face Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal but was found to be overweight for her category.
“Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning,” the Indian Olympic Association President P.T. Usha said in a statement.
Phogat was considered a strong prospect for winning gold at her third Olympics.
Meanwhile, the Australian Olympic Committee has confirmed a member of their Men’s hockey team was arrested after allegedly attempting to buy cocaine from a dealer in Paris.
The dealer, who was carrying 75 ecstasy tablets and seven vials of cocaine, was also arrested.
Both the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras were eliminated from the quarterfinals earlier this week.
And there are 21 gold medal events in Paris today in:
· Artistic swimming: Team acrobatic routine medal final
· Athletics (track and field): Marathon race walk mixed relay final; Women’s pole vault final; Men’s discus throw final; Men’s 400m final and the Men’s 3000m steeplechase final
· Boxing: Men’s 80kg final
· Sailing: Mixed multihull medal races
· Skateboard: Men’s park medal final
· Sport climbing: Women’s speed medal finals
· Taekwondo: Women’s 49kg medal finals
· Track cycling: Men’s & Women’s team pursuit medal finals
· Weightlifting: Men’s 61kg final and the Women’s 49kg final
· Wrestling: Women’s freestyle 50kg medal finals
Paris Olympic Games Women’s basketball quarterfinals overnight – Serbia 67-85 Australia, Spain 66-79 Belgium, Germany 71-84 France and Nigeria 46-76 USA at the end of Q3.
Men’s basketball semifinals – Germany vs France and USA vs Serbia.
In Rugby League: Parramatta Eels superstar Mitchell Moses has been sensationally linked to the Sydney Roosters amid reports he could request an early release from his contract, which runs until the end of 2026, with options in his favour for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.
Now, according to Fox League, “conversations have taken place” regarding Moses’ potential exit from the struggling Club.
In the Paris Olympic Games Football Women’s Semifinals yesterday: USA 1-0 Germany with Brazil 4-2 Spain.
So the Men’s finals: Spain vs France and Morocco vs Egypt for bronze.
In SportsBiz: Swedish pole vaulter Armand “Mondo” Duplantis set a world record while winning the men’s gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Monday, defending his title from the Tokyo Games.
Duplantis broke the Olympic and world records for the ninth time – setting the new mark at 6.25M.
While Sweden doesn’t pay its athletes for winning Olympic medals, the superstar pole vaulter has been receiving cash bonuses from US$30,000 to US$100,000 from his sponsors each time he has broken the world record.
In Boxing: Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer embroiled in a major gender controversy at the Paris Olympic Games, won her semi-final yesterday by unanimous points decision over Thailand’s 2023 world silver medalist, to move into Friday’s final in the Women’s 66kg category, to guarantee at least a silver medal.
The atmosphere was electric at Roland Garros with Sky News reporting that there were “thousands of Algerian fans” cheering their compatriot on.
What a back-fire on Russia and the International Boxing Federation.
And that’s a wrap girl!
