Episode 10: Deliverance (1972)
Manage episode 365048672 series 3462619
Welcome back to Film Haven Reivews!!! This week we are beginning a new theme of Backwoods Horror which centers around the isolating terror that comes with befalling nefarious intentions in the midst of being far away from the reach of normal society. There's no better film to start this theme off with then the iconic, if not somewhat notorious, Deliverance (1972).
This film is more than "that one scene" and while I found its action to be disapointing, I found its messaging to be engaging and thought provoking. There are many concepts within the film that get thrown around and many of them are at odds with each other. Mix that together with a morally ambiguous ending and we have a film that is either lazy in the execution of its themes, or sneakily brilliant, handing these concepts to the audience, allowing them to decide what they want to do with them. I gave this film a 7.5/10 for making me think so much, while sometimes boring me with its awkward editing during some of the more "tense" scenes. There's a reason this is a classic, but it doesn't feel like one of those movies that ages like fine wine. There are still some things that feel dated.
