List hai toh hit hai - Popular LGBTQ characters on Television - Episode 74

On today’s List hai toh hit hai podcast, we take a look at some of the most iconic LGBTQ characters on some of the most popular TV shows. Are you ready? The list is on

  1. Eric Effiong, Sex Education (Netflix)

The hit British comedy series on Netflix, Sex Education, has helped break down several social barriers regarding sexuality, gender norms, and identity. Set in a fictional British town, the story follows the lives of teenagers coming to terms with their sexuality. Ncuti Gatwa’s character Eric Effiong plays one of the leads alongside Asa Butterfield’s Otis and Emma Mackey’s Meave. Eric is one of the most popular characters on Netflix because of his wit and humor, he is also the heart and soul of the group and is openly gay despite being raised in a conservative household.

  1. Jules Vaughn, Euphoria (Disney+ Hotstar)

If Sex Education was a light-hearted take on young adult sexuality, then Euphoria is an amped-up version of the same. It features strong and explicit themes of drug abuse, trauma, sexuality, and existentialism. Hunter Schafer essays the role of Jules Vaughn, the love interest of Zendeya’s character Rue Bennett. Just like Hunter, Jules is a trans woman and is one of the most important characters of the show. Her character arc revolves around her chaotic relationship with Rue.

  1. David Rose, Schitt's Creek (Netflix)

The multiple-Emmy award-winning surprise hit, Schitt’s Creek, warmed hearts with its lovable characters and excellent humor. The story follows a bankrupt former millionaire who is forced to relocate with his wife and grown-up children to a small town called Schitt's Creek. The father-son duo of Eugene Levy and Daniel Levy has written and starred in the series as two of its leads alongside the outstanding Annie Murphy, and the iconic Catherine O'Hara. Daniel Levy’s character David is pansexual and is pivotal in breaking several stereotypes as well as normalizing LGBTQ relationships in television, largely thanks to the nuance in its screenplay.

  1. Capt. Raymond Holt, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Netflix)

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is undoubtedly one of the most popular comedy TV shows of the past decade. Its mockumentary style format and excellent characters give the 99th precinct of NYPD a unique charm and aesthetic. One of its most popular characters, Captain Raymond Holt, is a stickler for discipline, uncompromising, and also openly gay. Through Raymond, essayed by the excellent Andre Braugher, the series has broken down several stereotypes surrounding gay men.

  1. Viktor Hargreaves, The Umbrella Academy (Netflix)

Elliot Page’s gender transition was well-publicized in 2020 after he came out as a trans man. Netflix decided to incorporate this into the storyline of The Umbrella Academy where Page played the role of Vanya Hargreaves. In the series, he becomes Viktor Hargreaves in the third season and continues to be one of its most important characters.

  1. Robin Buckley, Stranger Things (Netflix)

Strangers Things continues to be one of Netflix's most popular shows, with the newly released fourth season receiving rave reviews for its storytelling and execution. While season three on the other hand is not the most well-received, it did introduce one of the story’s most likable characters, Robin. Played by Maya Hawke, daughter of Hollywood stars Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, Robin confides in Joe Keery’s Steve Harrington that she is a lesbian in an emotional scene. Her character continues to be instrumental to the story in season four and was part of several stand-out moments.

Well, that's the OTTplay list hai toh hit for today, until the next episode it's your host Nikhil signing out.
