Burnout is a mental and physical state that you may or may not have heard of before. Some people may define burnout as too much stress. While that amount of stress may have led to burnout, burnout is better defined as too little. Once you reach the level of burnout, the stress that you felt before almost disappears. It does not actually disappear, but you become so desensitized to it and everything else in your life that you begin to think that nothing matters. The items that stress you out do not disappear. Your motivation to complete them and everything else does.

Burnout occurs when you finally become unable to meet those constant and consistent demands. You are overwhelmed, emotionally drained and just want to give up everything. Nothing matters anymore. Burnout is often caused by stress from work or occupational responsibilities. However, it can be caused by any life role that you take on. Parents may feel burnout in their role of taking care of their children.

While stress can make you feel exhausted, burnout makes all of your energy and motivation disappear. You feel helpless and unable to do anything. And this can occur and affect all areas of your life. This amount of physical and emotional turmoil on your mind and your body can have extremely long-term effects. Your immunity will fall short and you will get sick often. You will also deal with other symptoms such as:

  • Isolation
  • Avoiding responsibilities
  • Procrastination
  • Tired and drained
  • Detached from others and the world
  • Feelings of helplessness
  • Sense of failure
  • Self-doubt
  • Skipping work and responsibilities
  • Using substances to cope
  • Change in appetite
  • Change in Sleep
  • Muscle pain

Trying to get ahead of burnout before it takes a hold of you can be helpful in the long run. If you experience any of these feelings or symptoms every single day, you may be headed towards a period of burnout.

How can Workplaces help with Burnout?

Well, for a start legislation is coming in around the World to ensure that businesses are responsible not just for an employee’s physical health and safety but a mental one as well. It’s called Occupational Mental Health & Emotional Safety and it’s not just an HR issue, its a Health & Safety one as well.

Companies are facing lawsuits for their lack of mental health policy or more often, a mental health policy that hasn’t been well thought out and implemented.

How so?

Well, for example lots of companies now have Employee Assistance Programs known as EAPS and then they think they have their mental health policy checked off. It couldn’t be further from the truth because EAP programs are just an employee benefit and not a substitution for a complete mental health policy.

The Gold standard Workplace Mental Health Policy is an outsourced solution to a specialist provider. Mental Health in the Workplace solutions will have a dedicated helpline for employees to be connected with a mental health crisis coach who can then escalate the issue either back to the company or to a specialist therapist. They can also help with reporting, mental health policies and often they will have a dedicated in-house counsel that helps develop their product offering.
