The inhabitants of the Americas have access to three times more benefits offered by nature than the global average of citizens, however, most countries in the large region that runs from the North to the South Pole are making unsustainable use of these resources - exceeding capacity ecosystems to renew themselves and promote quality of life. The Americas are home to 13% of the world's population and 7 of the 17 countries with the greatest biodiversity on the planet. In addition, they hold 40% of the capacity of the world's ecosystems to produce materials that can be consumed by mankind. On the other hand, they produce almost 25% of the global ecological footprint and natural resources are distributed very unevenly among the inhabitants of the great continent. Such an imbalance has a measurable impact. Comparing the region's current biodiversity with that existing at the beginning of European colonization, it is estimated that, on average, the populations of 31% of American species in a given area have declined - a number already considered high and which may reach 40% by 2050 Brazil is "undoubtedly" one of the American countries that make more intensive use of natural resources than is desirable. Since the year 1500 our economy has been extractivist, and the expansion of agribusiness has followed this line. The focus today is the Cerrado of the region that encompasses the states of: Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, Bahia. Although they produce food, a staple food, and contribute enormously to the country's trade balance, they do so in a predatory way. Many other factors such as pollution, invasive species and overexploitation of natural resources are contributing to the reduction of biodiversity. In short, we are borrowing natural resources - but with no prospect of returning them to the future of the next generations.
