Editor’s Note: This episode was recorded one week prior to recent legislative decisions by U.S. President Joe Biden, signing into law that TikTok will be banned unless sold within a year. Catalyst will continue to follow this story as it develops.

What happens when an app fades from existence — or gets legislated out of the hands of the public? What does it mean for the communities created and the communicators who are leveraging those platforms?

In this edition of In Under 10, we sat down with Jodie Lack and Lenny Zaleski, two members of IABC’s Student and Early Career SIG, to get their perspective on why communicators should pay attention to the potential ban on TikTok, as well as the growing popularity of short-form video content.

Mentioned in This Episode

Lenny Zaleski is a Chicago native currently studying public relations and political science at the University of Dayton and on track for an accelerated master’s in public administration. Zaleski has worked primarily for nonprofits and government agencies focusing on the environment, climate change, housing and human rights. His main areas of expertise include brand strategy, media relations, social media strategy, strategic communications and digital marketing.

Zaleski is a member of the IABC Greater Cincinnati chapter and the director of public affairs for the Student/Early Career SIG.

Jodie Lack is a high-performing early career public relations professional. She has an eager and passionate interest in the areas of tourism, B-Corporation, not-for-profit and government. With over two years of industry experience, Lack’s skills have been highly developed in media relations, social media, website design and event management. She graduated from Deakin University with a bachelor of communication (public relations) with a distinction in 2023.
