Listen on:

[00:00:00] Blake Beus: Let's talk about Facebook, Facebook, Facebook, Instagram,

[00:00:04] Greg Marshall: WhatsApp, anything

[00:00:06] Blake Beus: that Facebook owns, basically everything like their employees couldn't even badge in to the building. I did

[00:00:11] Greg Marshall: read that. What do you think.

[00:00:14] Blake Beus: Sure it makes it really hard to troubleshoot a problem. If you can't get into the building to fix the problem, I just thought

[00:00:19] Greg Marshall: it was crazy.

[00:00:19] Greg Marshall: Cause uh, they had that, uh, like, no, I messaged you yesterday. I remember. And I was like, that's crazy. The coincidence of this all happened the day after. I guess they had that 60 minutes, like employ come out and say that there was a funny. Yeah. Yeah, I guess not so great things. So

[00:00:38] Blake Beus: I, I actually had a few people reach out to me and say, oh, Hey, is this like, are they wiping their records and everything?

[00:00:46] Blake Beus: And. No just, no, this is purely coincidental. It's not, there's, there's too many backups of everything. Everything there's too many employees there that know everything they're not going in and cleaning up data or whatever. The 60 minutes interview was interesting. I actually listened to the whole thing, but it was interesting.

[00:01:07] Blake Beus: I do think that person's telling the truth. There's, there's probably some stuff going on there, but

[00:01:12] Greg Marshall: it's just, I think it's just too hard. Like one of the things, I guess, you know, an unpopular opinion would be at some level, I have sympathy for some of these, uh, CEOs and founders of these programs, because they're, I mean, imagine trying to manage.

[00:01:31] Greg Marshall: This type of, uh, I mean, you got over 2 billion people using the platform and most, most people can't even manage their own household. Let alone 2 billion people.

[00:01:41] Blake Beus: I can't manage my house. There's six of us. I can't manage. Yeah.

[00:01:46] Greg Marshall: And so it's, it's, it's, it's a very challenging task to have to go, you know, essentially manage 2 billion people, make sure everyone behaves in their best interest and you don't have any.

[00:01:57] Greg Marshall: You know, like, uh, personal biases, right? I mean, that's, that's just super challenging.

[00:02:02] Blake Beus: So in, in incredibly incredibly challenging. So, so, uh, but yeah, I mean, do we want to dive into the technical technical bits of it, or do you want to, do we want to talk about the impact on people or impact on advertisers?

[00:02:16] Blake Beus: Like what do we want to talk about?

[00:02:17] Greg Marshall: Basically the biggest thing we want to, uh, bring up in this, you know, shorter episode. Um, making sure that you're diversified and just multiple channels and understanding that each platform does have its value, but that you always need to understand what that value is, which is you don't own it.

[00:02:38] Greg Marshall: And we don't own a lot of things, but because you don't own it, you have to treat it as if one day can be taken away.

[00:02:45] Blake Beus: Yeah, and this is, this is why, uh, email platforms are so, so, so important and you might be thinking, okay, well, the email platform could, could go offline or whatever. That's, that's true. But email is a very old technology.

[00:03:00] Blake Beus: It's been around for a long, long, long time. And you can pull your own email address and back it up into like a, you know, an Excel spreadsheet or whatever. So you can always have your own copy of that information, but you have a way to communicate with your, your customers or followers or. In the event of some sort of large, uh, large breakdown or something that can impact things.

[00:03:20] Blake Beus: And that breakdown doesn't necessarily have to be a breakdown. It could be a change in the way Facebook does business or Instagram does business or changing a law or something like that, that can, that can deeply impact your business or. Or a change in, uh, Apple's terms and conditions make it difficult to, to, uh, your

[00:03:39] Greg Marshall: altruistic change.

[00:03:41] Greg Marshall: I really I'm happy that they care so much about my privacy, that they've teased them, but, you know, but here's, here's the thing, the advice that I would give to everyone, and I, I believe both you and I follow this right. Which is always understand nothing is forever. Things change. You always have to evolve and diversify as much as possible.

[00:04:04] Greg Marshall: And this is more, this isn't just about a Facebook thing or a Google thing, or an email thing. This is about in general, right? Because anything can be taken. You have to treat each platform like it can be taken away at some point, therefore making sure that you have a full-out system when it comes to marketing and running your business, you have to make sure your.

[00:04:27] Greg Marshall: Uh, multiple channels for, uh, acquisition for awareness. Um, you have to have backups to, you know, your customer list, your email that you just it's just in your best interest to make sure you're diversified. So let's say if two platforms go down, you still have another one to, to, to work with the likelihood that every single one of them goes down all at the same time is very low.

[00:04:49] Greg Marshall: Um, and I mean, and it is possible of course. Just give yourself the opportunity to not panic, because I saw a lot of people panicking yesterday, especially businesses for, for every right. You know, it's just like, if someone just basically shut your business down. Yeah.

[00:05:08] Blake Beus: And I'd like to add to that. The likelihood of all of them going down at once is very low.

[00:05:12] Blake Beus: The likelihood of one of them going down at some point in time in the future is almost certain very right. Like it's very, certainly the likelihood of one, one platform going down. Um, and, uh, so you definitely want to diversify and just diversify your business in general. I mean, when I was at working in the, uh, the financial industry, we had what we call disaster recovery protocols, and we would kind of test those out from time to time.

[00:05:35] Blake Beus: That's an enterprise level solution, but your business should have some sort of dash disaster recovery plan. Like, okay, I backed up the contacts or I have some offline data surrounding my orders, or I have ways to communicate with people if, if social media is down or

[00:05:49] Greg Marshall: whatever. So yeah, I think this is, this is a good, um, I, I don't want to call it a wake up call, but this is just a good demonstration of if you, if you're using platforms and almost.

[00:06:02] Greg Marshall: I'll just throw this word in there. If you're almost lazy building your business, right? Because we are spoiled. We do have access to so much data and so much, so many algorithms I can do most of the heavy lifting for us that we forget that you have to, in order to be a long-term business owner, you have to be thinking about.

[00:06:21] Greg Marshall: Well, if things shift or move, how will I move my business with it so that I don't have to like completely shut the doors. And that's, it's a scary thought. You never, you never want to do that. Thinking of like, what if this. Uh, but the reality is you have to, because once upon a time, um, you know, there was other marketing platforms and, and they just got con laws changed and they just, you can do many more, you know, the infomercial stuff changed back in the day.

[00:06:50] Greg Marshall: There's different platforms that changed back in it. Where it literally made it like impossible for you to do these marketing channels. And so you have to just be able to evolve

[00:07:00] Blake Beus: quickly. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. So we'll, uh, we'll wrap it up there, but we want to take a quick minute to, uh, to chat about what happened yesterday.

[00:07:09] Blake Beus: And, uh, how can impact people and we'll probably have a lot more episodes on diversification. I can even talk about the nitty gritty if, if people are interested on how to have a disaster recovery plan for your website, because a lot of people don't

[00:07:23] Greg Marshall: get that's, that's a great topic. And I think, you know, what we should do is if you need help with a lot of the backend stuff, Blake is really skilled.

[00:07:33] Greg Marshall: And that, that area, where, where should they go?

[00:07:36] Blake Beus: Just go to blink boost.com and you can contact me. I have a form on that side or a couple different ways you can reach out to me.

[00:07:41] Greg Marshall: And if, if you need help with your, uh, diversification of advertising or basically distributing. Uh, you know, visit my website, Greg marshall.co.

[00:07:50] Greg Marshall: And so yeah, if you guys need any help, I'm sure we'll put together some type of a plan or, uh, offerings that we can do that people can take advantage of. So be on the lookout for that. And, uh, thanks a lot for listening today and, uh, we'll see you next time. Can I talk to you

[00:08:05] Blake Beus: later?
