The War of the Worlds, by H G Wells chapter 11 "At the Window", narrated by Isaac Birchall
Our protagonist goes back to his study and looks out of the window at towards the Common where the cylinder fell. He sees several large shapes moving about the pit. Looking at how the beings move, he wonders if the metal beasts are sentient, or if they are piloted by the Martians that came from the cylinders. Everything in the area has been either destroyed or singed by flames and flailing arms, he sees that a train has been thrown off of its tracks. He then notices that a man is climbing over his fence, surprised and glad to see someone alive, he whispers down to him, and asks him to come inside. The man tells him that he is an artillery man, and that their guns and his battalion were all but destroyed by the Heat-Ray. The narrator finds the artillery man some food, and they both watch the window again, watching the now 3 metal beasts near the pit.
