The Preaching Matters Podcast

In this episode, I introduce the Keyword Method of sermon preparation. This is a twelve-step system of sermon preparation that should prove useful in your sermon preparation.
We are ready to put the material together and build an expository sermon. There are several steps in this process. First, there is the matter of developing a good outline. A rough outline may have been developed earlier, but in this stage of the sermon-building process, the outline can be revised and streamlined until it accurately reflects the clear teachings of the text.
The proper construction of the outline will aid the preacher in organizing his sermon materials that were gleaned during the exposition of the text. A suggested form for the outline is as follows:
I. Main points are indicated by Roman numerals
A. Main sub-points by a capital letter
1. Sub-sub points are noted by numerals
2. If there is a “1 “, there must at least be a “ 2”, at least. The number of
sub-sub points is dictated by the text.
a. sub-sub-sub points are indicated by lower case letters.
b. If there is an “a”, then there must be a “b”.
B. If there is an “A”, there must also be a “B”
C. The number of sub-points will be dictated by the text.
II. If there is an “I”, then there must be a “II”, at least.

C.
1 .
a.
b.
2.
Again, the number of main points is always determined by the text.
A well-constructed sermon outline may resemble the following.

B. God Blesses The Pure

A. V. 3 By The Prosperity Of The Sinner
B. V. 4 By The Peace Of The Sinner
C. V. 5 By The Pleasure Of The Sinner
D. V. 6-11 By The Pride Of The Sinner
E. V. 12-16 By The Progress Of The Sinner
1. He looked at the life he had been living for the Lord, v. 13.
2. He looked at his own share of sorrow, v. 14.
3. He looked at a life lived for the Lord and it
