Toby Johnson, PhD was a catholic monk turned gay rights activist, psychotherapist and spiritual writer. After entering religious life after high school during the 1960s, Toby unknowingly embarked on a lifelong process of spreading the message of positive gay spirituality. Toby was heavily influenced by the work and his personal correspondences with Joseph Campbell and half-jokingly considers himself Campbell’s apostle to the gay community. His background in comparative religion and counselling psychology led Toby to work in mental health for the gay community for many years. He has also published 10 books about gay consciousness, spirituality and more. He also was the editor and publisher for White Crane: A Quarterly Journal of Gay Men’s Spirituality. You can find Toby’s latest 2020 revision of Finding God in the Sexual Underworld: The Journey Expanded on Amazon. In working with Toby Marotta over 3 decades ago in a federally-funded study of teenage hustling for the bureau that ran halfway houses for runaway youth, Toby shares from his perspective as a scholar of comparative religion and a seeker on a spiritual path insights and wisdom on sex and god.

In this episode we will talk about …

-Toby’s experience of homosexuality, religion and monkhood in the 1960s as a young religious man.

-Why gay people and queer people are wired for spirituality and their greater purpose in the evolution of human consciousness on the planet.

-How certain mythologies imprinted in our field of awareness magnify inner polarity leading to more misalignment and unhealthy ways of being.

-The principle of non-duality, and the differences of heterosexual and homosexual patterns and proclivities and what that means for one’s spiritual path.

-Breaking free of the taboos of sex and pleasure and viewing sex as a sacred sacrament and spiritual tool to entered a higher state of consciousness.
