In this episode Beauty Makamure is interviewed by the editor Aline Afanoukoé.
Born and based in Zimbabwe, Beauty Makamure is a Ph.D. student in health sciences and specializing in infectious diseases. Her research focuses on the use of whole genome sequencing for the rapid detection of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) and identification of mutations presenting drug-resistant patterns. She is conducting her work in a low-income country, Zimbabwe, where there is little technology available and a high infection rate of TB. Inspired by female role models, friends and mentors, she believes that greater representation of female scientists is essential to encourage younger people to take an interest in the field.
She is one of the 20 African women researchers rewarded for the excellence of their scientific work through the For Women in Science Young Talents Program for Sub-Saharan Africa, led by The Fondation L’Oréal and UNESCO.
