Tough Love or Compassion

What do you say to yourself when the going gets tough?
When you’re struggling to eat in a new way or to stop eating your emotions?
Do you talk to yourself like a tough drill sergeant?
Do you coddle yourself like a baby?

What is the right thing to do?

Join me in this short coaching session as we discuss the three most common ways we tend to talk to ourselves when we struggle…some are helpful and some are not.

The first most common method of trying to motivate ourselves to do better is when we take the role of our very own mean girl.

Yelling at yourself, putting yourself down, saying things that make you feel hopeless.
Is this you? If it is, stop it right now!

The second most used method of trying to encourage yourself is in the form of self-compassion. This one sounds good, doesn’t it? It will show up as thoughts like, aww, don’t worry! You did the best you could, so just move on.

We think this is the best solution, but I’m going to explain why compassion alone is not enough.

And finally, there is the option of tough love. This is different than being mean to yourself. It firmly encourages you to do better, but without the mean girl element.

Join me as we look at the mental talk, all inside your head, that has the ability to totally derail you OR motivate you to get the best results ever.
