He is the first person to reach the North Pole and the South Pole by foot within one year. He rounded Cape Horn in a folding boat and crossed Greenland with sledge dogs in 70 days. At the Arctic Council ministerial meeting at Rovaniemi, Finland, India was re-elected as an Observer to the Arctic Council. India is one of the very few countries to set up a permanent station in the Arctic for the purposes of scientific research. Countries which already have ongoing activities in the Arctic hope to have a stake in the commercial exploitation of natural resources present in the region.
