In order to encourage the church in the present, and prepare them for the instruction and correction to come, the Apostle Paul lays the theological groundwork of God's work in the past and faithful promises for the future.

How does the Apostle Paul begin what will prove to be a difficult conversation with the Corinthian church-- By first going back to how they were first brought to Christ, called in the gospel, joined to community, and united with Christ.

Was the church in Corinth a 'true church'-- How we answer this question is important to rightly interpreting and applying the letter of 1st Corinthians. For here we see how Jesus Christ and Him crucified must be the center of our churches, our worship, our homes, and our lives.
