1:34:00The Tigers just wrapped up their first week of spring training, but the Voice of the Turtle is already back in midseason form! On this week’s episode, Rob and Hookslide break down the first week of games for the Tigers in 2017… or as best they can, seeing as no one broadcasts them (looking at you, Fox Sports Detroit). From the good to the bad, your fearless podcast hosts tell you what to pay attention to, what to ignore, and whether or not we should really be worried about Anibal Sanchez already. With Opening Day just 34 days away, it’s also time for predictions! Rob and Hookslide step back and take a look at all 30 MLB teams, and break down the potential division races before they unfold. They offer up their preseason picks for the World Series, as well as early predictions for MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year Awards. They also take to the latest batch of listener questions, and finish off the episode talking about how MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is doing his best to ruin baseball! Okay, maybe not all of the proposed rule changes are that bad, but don’t get us started on the one they have planned for extra innings. Topics in this week’s episode include: - Spring training: can you even see it? - The Tigers’ early season performance, and their current 0-0 record - Jordan Zimmermann and Anibal Sanchez are at opposite ends of the spectrum - Victor Martinez and what we can really discern from spring training numbers - MLB predictions! - Does Justin Verlander have a shot at the Cy Young? - Clayton Kershaw is unfair - Listener questions! - The best beers of the offseason - Rob Manfred is public enemy number one 2:32 - Rounding the Bases: T minus 34 days 26:50 - Warming in the Pen: 2017 MLB season preview 50:06 - Into the Mob Scene at Home: what about Anibal? 1:15:31 - The 7th Inning Kvetch: stop changing the rules!…
The Tigers family was saddened this past week to hear of the death of Tigers owner Mike Ilitch. Fans of the team will remember his legacy for a long time to come, and on this week's show, HookSlide and Rob talk about a few memories of "Mr. I," as well as discuss what his passing means for the future of the franchise. The Tigers are now only one week away from starting spring training games, so there is plenty to discuss: what will spring training look like with several members of the team leaving in March to play in the World Baseball Classic? What are people (already) saying about Joe Jimenez? Is the AL Central the weakest division in baseball now? Hookslide and Rob also take on the all-important question: if you made your own IPA and named it after a player, what would it be called? The show concludes with a visit from Steve Mikkelson, sportsbook director at Atlantis Casino in Reno, Nevada. Steve is always the first to publish MLB team win totals for the public to wager on, and he spends some time explaining for us how he arrives at those totals, and what he thinks the Tigers 2017 season will end up looking like. Topics in this week's episode include: - Mike Ilitch was a great owner - No, really, we were very, very lucky to have him - Is Drew VerHagen going to be a starter this year? - Joe Jimenez is already raising some eyebrows - The one "Tigers" thing you have to do at some point in your life - The AL Central race is really just Tigers vs Indians - Atlantis Casino and the Tigers' 85.5 win total Contents: 2:32 - Rounding the Bases: are we there yet? 34:55 - Warming in the Pen: the weakest division? 48:58 - Into the Mob Scene at Home: beer and tourism 1:01:40 - The 7th Inning Kvetch: betting on the Tigers (with Atlantis Casino's sportsbook director)…

57:00Pitchers and catchers report next week, and spring training games begin in a little over two weeks. Yes, after a weird winter and an especially boring offseason, baseball is finally knocking on the door, and not a moment too soon. In about 16 days you'll be able to turn on your radio and hear the voices of Dan Dickerson and Jim Price calling games, and at this point, who cares if it's just spring training? Speaking of Dan Dickerson, the Tigers play-by-play radio announcer joins HookSlide and Rob on this week's show to talk about all the hot topics surrounding the 2017 season: Can the Tigers compete this time around and actually make the playoffs? Will Jordan Zimmermann stay healthy enough to contribute? Can Michael Fulmer repeat his amazing 2016 campaign? Do the Tigers have a center fielder who can patrol that spacious Comerica green with any level of adequacy? And was it wise for Al Avila to move forward with the same roster as last year? Of course, there are also the usual listener questions to be answered, questions about the team's depth, the impact of the World Baseball Classic (both Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez are playing, believe it or not), and the recent low-ball PECOTA projections that predict a third-place finish for the Tigers. Topics in this week's episode include: - Did the Tigers cheap out on filling center field? - Remember Matt Tuiasosopo? - After 2017, will the Tigers tear it all down and start over? - PECOTA ... hmpf. - Dan Dickerson's favorite drink during ballgames - And more Contents: 2:08 - Into the Mob Scene at Home: picking apart PECOTA 30:42 - The 7th Inning Kvetch: Season preview with Dan Dickerson…

1:20:00It may not be that chilly outside, but this has been one frosty winter for the Detroit Tigers. Spring is just around the corner, though, and you know what that means! Yes, your favorite podcast hosts are back with another episode of The Voice of the Turtle! Rob and Hookslide shake off the cobwebs this week, and discuss the winter that was in Tigers baseball. In particular, they break down the Mikie Mahtook trade. Was it a good move for the Tigers? What happens now with Anthony Gose? Is center field still a major problem? Spring training is almost here, and that means position battles! Your fearless co-hosts look at the major decisions that will happen down in Lakeland, including the fifth starter spot and the last couple bench spots. They also look at the rest of the AL Central to see where the Tigers stack up heading into 2017. Oh, and of course, a heaping batch of listener questions! Topics in this week's episode include: - What are podcasts? How do they work? - Mikie Mahtook: maybe good, maybe bad - JaCoby Jones and his new role in Toledo - The best position battles of spring training - How far ahead are the Cleveland Indians? - Hawk Harrelson's hopes and dreams - Listener questions! - Rob is (not) in the best shape of his life Contents: 2:54 - Rounding the Bases: what's going on in CF? 32:49 - Warming in the pen: Detroit vs Everybody 52:37 - Into the Mob Scene at Home: in the best shape of our lives…

1:44:00It was a long and weird November, but The Voice of the Turtle is back to break down the MLB Winter Meetings, especially the Tigers' rather strange and unexpected lack of activity. With Rob Rogacki on vacation, Bless You Boys staff writer Brandon Day joins HookSlide on this week's episode to discuss what Al Avila is really up to, whether or not he actually has a plan for 2017, and if the Tigers stand a chance of competing next season if they intend to "stand pat" and not make any major trades or free agent signings. Also in this episode, Brandon and HookSlide talk about Dave Dombrowski's major move to get Chris Sale into the Red Sox rotation, and whether the Red Sox are now favorites to win the World Series, even against the defending champion Chicago Cubs. And with the rest of the AL Central seemingly going into rebuild mode -- minus the Indians, of course -- how likely is it that the Tigers could win the division title in 2017? Topics in this episode include: - Why didn't the Tigers make any moves at the Winter Meetings? - Are the Ilitch's planning to sell the team? - Is the AL Central division going to be an easy win for the Tigers in 2017? - How likely is it that Dave Dombrowski is going to win a World Series before Al Avila does? - Will Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey both be returning to the starting rotation? - Guess who's back in the Tigers' system? (Hint: it's Omar Infante) - The Red Sox got Chris Sale, the Cubs got Wade Davis, and something's gotta give - Listener questions - How did Justin Verlander not win the Cy Young? - What's Andy Dirks up to these days? Contents: 2:41 - Rounding the Bases: does Al Avila even have a plan anymore? 33:25 - Warming in the pen: this is the team to beat in 2017 1:06:12 - Into the Mob Scene at Home: how bad did Verlander get screwed?…

1:06:00The World Series is almost over -- or perhaps, already over, by the time you read this. The Indians lead the Cubs three games to two, and everything will either be decided by the time this podcast gets posted, or the day after that. Either way, we're on the very cusp of the true baseball offseason, and the Tigers will most certainly be making some moves very soon. In the meantime, HookSlide and Rob tackle some listener questions mostly related to alcohol (craft beer, to be specific), as well as a few speculations concerning what the Tigers' roster will look like in 2017 and what prospects might be a part of that plan. For an additional listener treat, we've gone back in time to the interview we held with Tigers' radio play-by-play announcer Dan Dickerson, way back in February of 2016 before the season had started. It's like going back to an old family photo album to see how much has changed, and how much hasn't. We think you'll enjoy the trip down memory lane and hearing what we all thought was going to happen with the Tigers in 2016, before we had the advantage of 20/20 hindsight vision. Topics in this episode include: - Best Michigan breweries - When is the best time to stock up on alcohol in the offseason? - But what if the Tigers really do sign Alex Avila again? - Andrew Miller may or may not be a part of the Indians roster going forward - There's a reason the Tigers haven't won a World Series in the last 10 years - Jordan Zimmermann, man -- what a bummer Contents: 8:16 - Into the Mob Scene at Home: beer me some good news 35:38 - The 7th inning Kvetch: going back in time with Dan Dickerson…

1:17:00Hard to believe it's been 50 episodes since we kicked off this podcast as "The Voice of the Turtle" in the summer of 2015. We saw the team tank, we saw the team rebound, we saw the team make a run at the postseason this year, and -- if Al Avila's latest comments are to be taken literally -- we're about to watch the team go through something like a rebuild process. (But don't call it that. Please don't call it that.) So much for a slow and boring offseason, eh? In this, our fiftieth episode, HookSlide and Rob try to make sense out of Al Avila's promise to make the team both "leaner" and "younger" this offseason, a process that he says will take some time, and may be painful at certain points. So what's that mean? Who's getting traded? Who's staying? Is this a departure from the two-year plan, or part of it? Will Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera still be Tigers when spring training arrives next year? (Yes. Obviously. Don't be foolish.) And then we answered a bunch of listener questions and called it a good day, because both of us wanted to watch the World Series. Topic include: - Al Avila's "changes are coming" comments - Who's getting traded - Who's not getting traded - Why not just keep the team together one more year? - Who are the Tigers' potential trade partners? - Are J.D. Martinez and Ian Kinsler the first to go? - Are Christin Stewart and Joe Jimenez ready to step up and play MLB ball next year? Contents: 4:03 - Rounding the Bases: getting leaner, getting younger 41:52 - Into the Mob Scene: preparing for change…
With the MLB postseason still in motion, the #HotStoveSeason has yet to officially begin, which means the Tigers haven't done anything worth talking about since their regular season ended. However! Baseball is still happening (enjoy it while it lasts, folks) and your fearless hosts are able to find creative ways to link the postseason activity back to relevant Tigers topics. In this episode, Rob and HookSlide talk about the bullpen revolution currently happening in the form of Terry Francona, Joe Maddon, and Dave Roberts using their best relief pitchers in rather unorthodox ways. What does this mean for the future of baseball, and especially, for the future of the Tigers? Will Brad Ausmus start using K-Rod outside the ninth inning? Will the Tigers' front office stop searching for closers and start looking for possible bullpen "firemen," as was the case in the 1970's and 1980's? Also in this show, we talk Sabermetrics 101 and explain the fundementals of how to evaluate hitters using statistics other than batting average, home runs, and RBIs. Topics include: - Do the Tigers already have an "Andrew Miller"? - Are the Indians as good as they seem? - What's the one thing the Tigers need to do in the offseason? - Does Toronto have any good beers? - Why isn't batting average a good enough stat? - Who was better? Al Kaline or Miguel Cabrera? - What's a "wRC+"? Contents: 2:08 - Rounding the Bases: bullpen fever 34:40 - Into the Mob Scene: making stuff up 1:04:37 - 7th Inning Kvetch: Sabermetrics 101 and evaluating hitter…
The Voice of the Turtle is back to its usual makeup this week, as Rob returns from his one-week vacation on Podcastellanos Island. Your co-hosts break down the last few games of Tigers baseball -- ok, it was mostly just sighs of disappointment -- and look ahead at what the offseason holds. Rob and Hookslide also offer their picks for this postseason, and wonder just what in the world Buck Showalter was doing in Tuesday's AL Wild Card Game. Of course, it wouldn't be an offseason episode of The Voice of the Turtle if some big news didn't break the day of recording. Earlier on Wednesday, the Tigers announced that Brad Ausmus would be back for 2017. We examine that decision, offer a swear or two, and break down why or why not it was the right decision for the Tigers. There's even some positivity to be found! Rob and Hookslide also look back at Al Avila's first year on the job as general manager, and re-evaluate our own preseason picks (spoiler: they're not all awful!). Topics in this week's episode include: - Rob's real plans for the offseason - A bunch of "welp" in place of real analysis of the final series of the year - The good, the bad, and the ugly of 2016 - Zach Britton has thrown as many AL Wild Card pitches as we have - Postseason predictions! - Brad Ausmus is back, and we're [redacted] about it - Listener questions! - What are we drinking this offseason? - Al Avila's report card Contents: 2:08 - Rounding the Bases: exit interviews 29:16 - Warming in the Pen: there’s still some baseball to be played 40:58 - High and Tight: have another dose of Ausmus 1:03:43 - Into the Mob Scene: what to drink in the offseason 1:31:33 - 7th Inning Kvetch: grading Al Avila…

1:25:00Rubber, meet road. The Tigers have three remaining games left (plus a makeup game, if it's still necessary) before the regular season ends, and they've got some catching up to do. In this week's episode, HookSlide is joined by Podcastellanos co-host Eric Wayne, in an attempt to mix things up a bit and hopefully restore some much-needed mojo to the Tigers. HookSlide and Eric discuss what needs to happen for the Tigers to get into the postseason, and who to root for if they get eliminated. The Cubs are the big story, of course, but there's a sleeper candidate that is probably more worthy of rooting for if our boys from Motown aren't in the picture. The highlight of the podcast? Eric finally, finally reveals his rankings of models of minivan. You don't want to miss that. Topics include: - Why can't the Tigers beat the Indians? - Are we left to "sour grapes" now? - Does "second wild card" mean anything in the grand scheme? - Brad Ausmus is probably/definitely/maybe coming back (or not) - If not the Tigers, who should win the World Series? - Listener questions - Models of minivan Contents: 2:08 Rounding the Bases: down the wire 16:43 Warming in the Pen: biting all the nails 36:57 High and Tight: the shape of October 47:40 Into the Mob Scene: this is getting silly 1:11:46 7th Inning Kvetch: Power ranking…

1:41:00Last time we spoke, we thought the Detroit Tigers would either blaze their way to the World Series or flame out spectacularly and miss the playoffs. And we might be right! Unfortunately, we were right for all the wrong reasons last week, as the Tigers stumbled to a 3-4 record in ever-frustrating fashion. The offense isn't hitting, wasting the efforts of a rather strong starting staff, just like we expected. Fortunately, no other teams have separated themselves in the AL Wild Card race, and the Tigers still have a fighting chance! On this week's episode of The Voice of the Turtle, your fearless co-hosts wrestle with apathy and excitement, trying to determine whether this Tigers team has what it takes to reach the postseason. Can they get there? What will it take? Do they have to reach the postseason to save Brad Ausmus' job? We answer these questions and more on this week's show. Topics in this week's episode include: - What the hell happened last week? - Terry Francona, baseball manager - Daniel Norris: fire emoji - How many wins the Tigers need to make the postseason - Why May 2017 is going to be terrible - Potential baseball rule changes and how wrong they are - Listener questions! - Michael Fulmer's chances at winning some hardware - Are the Tigers better off without Victor Martinez? 1:20:00If it feels like you've heard this week's episode of The Voice of the Turtle before, well... you haven't. But it might sound a bit similar to some of our previous shows because, once again, our beloved Detroit Tigers just can't quite string enough wins together to edge themselves ahead in the AL playoff picture. Missed opportunities, inconsistent play, and a general bewilderment cloud this week's show, as Rob and Hookslide are still trying to decipher just exactly how good this Tigers team is. Of course, a lot of that bewilderment comes in the form of one big decision: Jordan Zimmermann's ill-timed start on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. He was predictably clobbered in a game the Tigers really could have used, yet the Tigers didn't realize their mistake until after it was too late. Who was at fault here? What should the Tigers have done differently? Will they ever really learn from their mistakes? We tackle all these questions, along with those provided by you, the listener, in our Into the Mob Scene segment! Topics in this week's episode include: - Which is better: Little League, or the 2016 Tigers? - The last week of baseball was no bueno - Frustration, frustration, frustration - At least this Bruce Rondon guy is pretty good - What happened to JaCoby Jones? - Can the Tigers still win the division (spoiler: no) - Why Jordan Zimmermann made his start on Saturday despite all fans saying "Noooooo!" - Listener questions! - What will the starting rotation look like in 2017? Contents: 3:03 - Rounding the Bases: Hashtag Urgency 24:21 - Warming in the Pen: the reckoning is upon us 39:34 - High and Tight: ZIMMERMAAAAAAANNNN! 52:51 - Into the Mob Scene at Home: there’s always 2017 – wait, what?…

1:28:00When you stop watching baseball for over a week, and your team's win percentage looks pretty much exactly the same upon your return, that's probably not a good sign -- at least, not this late in August, and not when your team is struggling just to nail down a second wild card spot. In this week's episode, Rob Rogacki and HookSlide do a "deep dive" into the same-old-same-old, breaking down the series against the Red Sox, Twins, and White Sox. Is Justin Upton's recent hot streak for real this time? Is the bullpen finally done being more wobbly than a drunk unicyclist with vertigo? There's also a preview of the upcoming series against the Royals and White Sox (yes, we're playing them again that soon), and the matchups are not so favorable for our Motor City team. Can the Tigers knock the Orioles out of the way and claim that second wild card spot? Well, we're getting ahead of ourselves and will have to wait until next week's show to discuss that. Topics in this week's episode include: - Justin Upton -- hot or not? - Sad Hawk Harrelson clips - Mad Hawk Harrelson clips - Alex Wilson is good again - Miguel Cabrera is having an awesome second half - The offense is SO F*CKING STREAKY - Which umpires are the best at #UmpShow - Does this team really have the pitching to compete in September? - A bunch of injured guys are coming back soon, maybe that will help - JaCoby Jones is a Tiger, finally - Cameron Maybin is great when he's healthy, which he rarely is, so ... he's not great? - The return of the Pelfrey - ABSOLUTELY NO TIM TEBOW OR COLIN KAEPERNICK TALK…

1:41:00...And yet, we figured out a way to miss nearly all of the baseball that happened since last week's episode of The Voice of the Turtle. So, instead of staying up all night cramming for this week's show like we're back in college (and let's be honest, we'd probably just end up at the bar), we decided to do our first ever Listener Email Show! That's right, this week's episode is nothing but us answering your questions about the Tigers, their playoff chances, the trade for Erick Aybar, and a few offseason ideas. You asked us about Mike Aviles, Justin Upton, and off-the-wall prospects like John Hicks, and we dutifully provided our best (and worst) answers for your inquiries. We even discussed what it would take to do a daily podcast! (Hint: a lot.) Of course, there are a couple of tangents along the way. Orioles Zach Britton was discussed as a potential Cy Young candidate earlier this week, so we debated his candidacy, along with that of one Michael Fulmer. Al Avila has had a year in the big boss chair as Tigers GM, and we discuss how he has done in his first season on the job. Rob even gives out a hot take about Brad Ausmus, as well as his suggestion for who could replace him when he inevitably (we hope?) moves on. In all, the episode still nearly reaches the two-hour mark, but is one of our best and favorites yet. Keep the questions coming!…

1:26:00The Tigers snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, putting a dour mood on this week's podcast. While the Tigers are still red-hot, having won 10 of 14 games leading into this week's show, a three-game losing streak does sting a bit. Of course, there is more to it than just a short skid. Injuries are mounting in Detroit, and the Tigers' roster is being stretched even thinner than usual. Cameron Maybin, Jordan Zimmermann, Mike Pelfrey, and Nick Castellanos are all on the disabled list, and a couple others might not be far behind. The Tigers do have J.D. Martinez back and Anibal Sanchez pitching well (for the moment), but is that enough? We debate how effectively the Tigers can keep pushing forward while they wait for their role players to heal. Speaking of injury news, Prince Fielder is no longer able to play baseball due to his second neck surgery in three years. Rob and Hookslide discuss Prince's career in Detroit, and where he ranks among some of the better players in Tigers history. There are also listener questions to be answered, and as always, we offer our opinions on just how this bullpen should be managed. Topics in this week's episode include: - West coast baseball and why it's awful - Michael Fulmer: still good - Anibal Sanchez: good again? - Why facing the Rangers isn't fun - Prince Fielder and where he ranks among Tigers greats - Listener questions! - Can Tim Tebow play baseball? - The Tigers' bullpen is bad again - Rob's newest hobby Contents: 2:23 - Rounding the Bases: how to lose even when you win 25:17 - Warming in the Pen: how to beat the Rangers 38:37 - High and Tight: good night, bittersweet Prince 54:18 - Into the Mob Scene at Home: midnight hot-takes 1:09:29 - The 7th Inning Kvetch: seriously, bullpen?…
