Shifting Perceptions is a student-led initiative from McMaster University, Hamilton that was founded in response to the rising incidence of overdose deaths from substance use. Our mission is to unpack misconceptions surrounding substance use and harm reduction. We engage in conversations with people from various perspectives - policymakers, community organizers, professionals, and people with lived experience. We advocate for people at the centre of harm reduction and substance use policies. More information and resources are on our website: https://shiftingperceptionsyj.wordpress.com/

For our seventh episode, Dr. Jennifer Brasch, associate professor and a member of the Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neuroscience at McMaster University, joins us to discuss antagonist therapy for opioid use disorder patients, how she restores the lifestyle of her patients and the mental health challenges for the patients and their family.…

There are many aspects that are to be considered when exploring foundations of addiction, specifically motivations in decision-making such as emotional arousal, anticipation or even reward processing. As a society, we seem to have conceptualized addictions as caused by moral failures, however this is untrue. Addictions manifest due to differences in our neuroanatomy. This finding has been used to classify an array of conditions and diagnoses as well as help us gain a better understanding of the biological underpinning of the phenomenon known as addiction. Dr. Balodis, professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, joins us to expand our knowledge on the concept of decision making. Her diverse knowledge on gambling, cannabis use, binge earning, and crack cocaine provide insights on addictions as a whole and various modes of motivation.…

For decades, the music industry has been associated with drugs, alcohol, and rock n’ roll. The glamorization of the addiction in the music industry has left out important conversations around rising overdose rates and the opioid crisis. The lives of famous musicians Amy Winehouse, Prince, and Mac Miller were tragically lost due to alcohol and/or drug implications. However, the music industry has the power to create change internally by creating a culture of awareness. In this episode, we speak with Ace Piva, a certified addictions counsellor and founder of Over the Bridge . We discuss bringing awareness to the culture of substance use, the importance of music in harm reduction efforts, and the current overdose prevention awareness efforts within the music industry.…

Prisoners are a high-risk population for opioid overdose. One in ten of overdose death occurs within one year after release from the prison. Prisoners need to receive respectful and equitable access to overdose prevention programs. However, the voice of this marginalized population is not being heard. Sandra Ka Hon Chu, the Director of Research and Advocacy at the Canadian HIV/AIDS legal network and a lawyer by profession discusses the challenges faced while advocating for harm reduction in prisons and the legal tools that advocates can use to amplify their voices.…

Providing spaces for people who use drugs to consume safely under medical supervision has never been easy. In this podcast, we trace how Canada got its first supervised consumption site and the current legal framework for this harm reduction intervention. Dr. Kirsten Mattison, the Director of Drug Policy and Science at Health Canada, joins us to discuss the intricacies of the policy behind providing care to people who use drugs, and how advocates and health professionals are essential to addressing the opioid crisis.…

If you want to learn about substance use and addiction, a good place to start is exploring what community organizations have done. Hamilton is facing rising opioid-related deaths. On Shifting Perceptions, Tim Clemont joins us to talk about how the Hamilton AIDS Network is working towards people-centered harm reduction services – what it has achieved, challenges experienced, and what still needs to be done.…
