The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. To be clear, this episode is about Hollywood, not wood as a weapon. So, if you've ever wondered about those killings that are shrouded in the glitz and glam of Hollywood, today's your day! Are we surprised that Hugh Hefner and homophobia play a huge role in our stories? Unfortunately, no. First, Brandon introduces us to a Dorothy Stratten, a woman that went from being an ice cream attendant to Playboy's Playmate of the Year. Not that we need to take anything this guy says seriously, but Hugh Hefner went on the record to say: "There is still a great tendency for this thing to fall into the classic cliché of ‘small town girl comes to Playboy, comes to Hollywood, life in the fast lane… That is not what really happened. A very sick guy saw his meal ticket and his connection to power, whatever, slipping away. And it was that that made him kill her." At the end of the day, that's a very convenient narrative for Hugh, the ring leader of the Playboy Mansion, to subscribe to. So you'll just have to listen for yourself to decide what you think is true! Next, Kevin takes us way back in time to the 20s when the...dust bowl ...happened?? Oh wait, no! The Roaring 20s... That's what he meant. Those two historical events are apparently pretty easily confused! But, if you've ever taken a film history class, you've probably heard the name Ramon Navarro. He was a Mexican Actor who began his career in 1917 in American silent films. He quickly became a leading man and one of the top Actors of the 1920s and early 1930s films! His life would end tragically when two homophobic and deeply disturbed hustlers decided to play judge, jury and executioner. Tune-in to learn what came of his assailants. We hope it will make you incredibly angry so we can all grab our pitchforks and go...vote! This is your friendly reminder to get out there and vote this November!! ----- 00:00 - Start 01:46 - Gab with us! 24:17 - Dorothy Stratten (Brandon's Story) 46:30 - Ramon Navarro (Kevin's Story) ----- For links to cited sources and references, check out the show notes on our website. After today's episode, you'll never look at your toolbox the same way! Or children for that matter. We drunkenly decided on this week's topic: death by hammer. And what did we find? Creepy little men killing their parents! Who's surprised!? Kevin takes us on a journey to Tyler Hadley's place where a band of teenagers unknowingly throw a huge rager while Tyler's parents lay dead under a pile of coffee grounds. Sounds effed up, right? It is. Almost as effed up as the fact that none of us were invited to huge parties like that in high school... Seriously though, Tyler was a creep who premeditated his parent's murder. And, even with it being premeditated, he still chose a hammer as his weapon. There's a lot to unpack there... But one major takeaway: if your friend is randomly bringing up their fixation with the idea of killing their parents - maybe take them seriously! Then, Brandon takes us to the UK to answer the question "who killed the Blackwell's"? Turns out - it's their freak of a son! After basically robbing his parents by lying to the bank (a feat we still can't quite wrap our brains around), Brian Blackwell went insane with the hammer he just so happened to be holding. Moral of these stories? Don't have children! Or if you do, don't give them any sharp or heavy objects until they've successfully proven themselves to be mentally sane. If you enjoy this episode, it's time to get loud! We want to hear from you - whether it's through comments or reviews, your support is what keeps us going. See you next week for some saucy Hollywood creammmmms! ----- 00:00 - Start 00:08 - We're really just talking here... Are you choosing the bear or the man? After today's episode, we think you'll join us in choosing the bear. If you're not on TikTok and you have no idea what we're talking about - women across social media are saying that if they had to choose between being attacked by a man or a bear, they would choose the bear. And what state do you think of when you think of the bear? That's right! Chicago. So sit back and relax (?) while Kevin and Brandon tell the tale of two absolute monsters that terrorized the city. Speaking of... Chicago has a very long list of serial killers. What's going on there? If you're based in Chicago, please clue us in. Brandon kicks us off with The Ripper Crew. TRIGGER WARNING: female body mutilation. The Ripper Crew consisted of 4 homely, inbred-looking white dudes. Are we surprised? Robin Gecht, Edward Spreitzer and brothers Andrew and Thomas Kokoraleis went on a killing spree that ended in satanic sacrifices. We say they look inbred because they... probably are. For some unknown reason, the kinks of the fathers and grandfathers before them were passed down. Why you would even be aware of what your grandfather's sexual kink is, we will never know. Robin set up a “satanic chapel “ in the attic of his family home. The three would often meet when his wife was not home. This attic space was only lit by candlelight, had an altar that was draped with a red cloth, and had six red and black crosses at the back of it. If that doesn't give you an eerie sneak peak into the vibes of this story, we don't know what will. Next, Kevin is telling us all about one of America's first mass m$rders (censored so YT doesn't shadowban us!). Richard Speck killed eight female nursing students in something the coroner called the, “crime of the century.” You'll hear about the sole survivor of Speck's rampage. Hearing the way she recounted the story and then stood up and called out Speck in court is really a feat. Considering the current state of this country and the sheer amount of mass m$rders we see on a weekly basis, it's a bit surreal to learn more about the first documented one. But perhaps the most interesting thing about this case is what Richard did once he was in prison. Stick around for the end to hear about this... strange turn of events. Surprise, surprise! There are some downright EVIL gays out there. What are we gonna do about it!? We're gonna yap about how sinister and disgusting they are of course! Today, we're learning about queer killers that are making it 10X harder to have a safe and sexy hook up. BOO! Tomato, tomato, tomato! Kevin is kicking us off with the tale of Stephen Port, AKA - the Grindr Killer (he was hitting all of the 'sax' apps). This story is one of fake overdoses and police malpractice. Are we surprised that police dropped the ball and refused to investigate when multiple young queer men were turning up dead in the same suspicious circumstances? Unfortunately, no. So if you're on those sexy apps, we support you girl. Just make sure you've got some safety measures in place because some people are literally psychotic! Then Brandon is taking over for a story of a lesbian couple that will make your stomach turn. And it's not because they're lesbians! They count too! Stacey Mitchell, a sweet, albeit annoying, teenage girl with a propensity to post weird sh*t on MySpace (classic teenage girl behavior), had the misfortune of meeting Jessica Stasinowsky and Valerie Parashumti. Jessica and Valerie were a straight up diabolical couple. They were part of the vampire subculture and took it about one thousand steps too far. This story includes a "pash" over Stacey's body and a little weenie of a boy who asked to be blindfolded and escorted away from the murder. This episode brings a sinister twist to groupthink. What do you mean you and your friend band together to off people!? Girl, get a hobby! Think you know all about the "Manson Family"? Think again. And buckle up for Christmas in July with four teenagers who went on a killing spree to... deck the halls. Rude. Brandon wants to escape the heat so he's bringing us Christmas in July with "The Downtown Posse" that went on a Christmas killing spree. Hello, West Side Story? Except, not at all. Brandon really wants you to know that, above all else, this story is set in Dayton, Ohio. Two couples, estranged from their families, formed a gang and lost their marbles. In the process, they irrevocably ruined Christmas in 1992 for a lot of people in... Dayton, Ohio. Did we mention this story is set in Dayton, Ohio? Next, Kevin is introducing us to someone named Charles Manson. We don't know, we doubt you've ever heard of him. 🤓 He's a very niche psychopath. But whatever you know about Charles Manson and his cult of devotees, you probably don't know too much about his victims. So today, Kevin's focusing on bringing the spotlight to those that are often forgotten. Oh also, yeast infections? Get your dutch ovens! Mama's making bread! Today's Homotown Murder was submitted by Julius Vaughn. Not only is he an avid Homocide listener and follower, he is also a friend of hosts Kevin and Brandon. His energy is addicting, and his storytelling - is on point, henny! In his Homotown murder, Julius tells the tale of sleazeball shitbag, Steven Lorenzo. Taking his fantasies to an extremely unhealthy level, Steven quickly becomes the reason behind Tampa gays creating a buddy system. This twisted story will keep you on your toes, helping to drive the message that it's always important to trust that little voice in your head that says, "no f*ckin way!" Leave the murdering to the adults, kids! God, these murderous children have no manners! Today is part two of kids who kill so BUCKLE UP. This episode will have you looking sideways at that creepy kid whose always making disturbing comments. Turns out, you actually can’t always chalk it up to a wild imagination. Brandon is taking us to England where an argument about sneakers apparently turned south and ended with a mother slain by her own child. Jacqueline Bartlam, mother to Daniel and Dominic, was described as a sweet woman. People even described Daniel and Jacqueline as being close! So why would her own child turn against her? Surely it wasn’t just because of a pair of shoes. Well, certain disturbing incidents (…pooping and peeing in super inappropriate places…), definitely pointed towards mental illness. But you’ll have to tune into the episode to find out what the verdict in Daniel’s case was! Then, Kevin is introducing us to an iconic (demonic?) little girl named Mary Bell. Mary Bell and her creepy, gross friend Norma might bring the shining twins to mind. Mary Bell was taking her childhood trauma and inflicting it tenfold on the younger kids in the schoolyard. Four-year-old Martin Brown was found with an empty bottle of pills next to his body. Originally, his death was assumed to be an accident. Weird oversight considering Mary Bell actually strangled him! We’re diving into nature vs. nurture, The Mary Bell Orders (think witness protection…for convicts), and a b!tch named Sarah. It’s a wild ride that’s sure to keep you up at night! Just what you twisted weirdos ordered! XOXO - love you! For source material, click HERE . If you enjoyed this episode, share the show with your friends. 95% of our ocean is unexplored. If that doesn’t make you sh*t your pants a little… we don’t know what will! There are so many “lost at sea” tales out there. But, what is it actually like to be lost at sea? How desperate would you actually get? Well, today we’ve have a special guest, Hillary Burtnett, Kevin’s long time friend from his high school years. As a member of the US Coast Guard, she’s got the inside scoop on atrocities at sea. Also…cheating husbands with their pants down on a boat? Get it together people! I’m looking at YOU, Florida Man. Kevin starts us off by taking us back in time to 1884, when a small crew set sail on the Mignonette, a small yacht that left out of the same port the Titanic would later leave from (bad juju, amiright?). Little did they know, this trip would turn them into cannibals! But these cannibals might actually be crowned “Cannibals with the Most Integrity,” because they admitted their crimes as soon as they were rescued. Slay!!!!... I suppose. Brandon then takes us to for a deep dive into darker waters. Thanks a lot, Brandon! Oba Chandler, an average looking Joe who came from a family of dairy farmers, used his boat for pure evil. Are we surprised that a white straight man with a boat is an awful human being? No! But we were a bit surprised to find out that he was caught... you'll see why! Moral of the story? Don’t get on a boat with a stranger! And maybe keep your pants on while you’re out there too. The ocean is way too convenient of a spot to dump a body. Go to the mountains instead! Satanic Panic - a phrase you may have heard a few times in the past. From people like Richard Ramirez to the Son of Sam, satanic murders are nothing rare... unfortunately. Today's episode is about two lesser-known teen killers who were inspired by Satan and had one thing in common... the urge to participate in a human sacrifice. Ew. Also... Not today, Satan! Starting us off, Brandon dives into the story of Christa Pike, a troubled teen with a trauma-filled past and some mental health issues. This story has its ups and downs and will leave you asking - why did you have to grab the meat cleaver?! Then Kevin finishes the episode with the shocking tale of Moises Meraz-Espinoza, an 18-year-old who took revenge on his mother, who happened not to like his choice in music. Well, that and his obsession with satanic rituals. Like... can we all agree some people shouldn't have access to the internet? Welcome to Colorado! From the vastness of the Rocky Mountains to the 300 days of annual sunshine, and the diverse cities to some of the most fu*ked-up murderers, this state has something for everyone. With stories like JonBenét Ramsy, Columbine High School, Tedd Bundy, and the Aurora Theater shooting, Kevin and Brandon found two stories that are just as awful. With perspective from our co-host Kevin, whose formative years were spent in various cities throughout the state, this week's episode is about two awful humans that took the lives of many, right in the heart of the West. Get ready for this insane episode, and forewarning, it contains the retelling of some traumatic sexual assaults and gory events. Kevin starts us off by diving into the story of a greedy, narcissistic man with severe mommy issues. John "Jack" Gilbert Graham, a hapless criminal and one of Colorado's worst mass murderers, is a dude who didn't get the memo that the song "It's Raining Men" was about delicious, sexy men raining down on you, fulfilling your ultimate gay naked fantasies. Instead, he thinks the song means something quite sinister. Stupid boy. Then Brandon dives into the story of a 12-day murderous rampage that would take over 30 years to convict a murderer who had no motive. The story of the Colorado Hammer Killer, Alex Ewing, is a fu*ked-up tale of a small man with weirdo tendencies and a lot of hatred. The moral of this story, friends... Lock. Your. Doors! New York, New York, what a helluva town! From the buildings that seem to touch the skies to the majestic Statue of Liberty, New York is known for so much. One of our favorites - the murders! This week we take a deep dive into the 2nd part of our New York Murders with some chilling stories based right in the heart of the Big Apple. CONTENT WARNING: dismemberment, torture, rape Brandon starts off the episode with a twisted tale of a killer who was accidentally caught by the police. That's right, accidentally caught! Who knew that a missing license plate on a crusty old truck would be the start of a 20-minute high-speed chase around Long Island? What the police weren't expecting when they apprehended the driver was the decomposing body in the bed of the truck. Sure, the police were gooped and gaged... like literally, we would have gaged over the smell emitting from the back end too. From here, we learn about the slaying of at least 17 sex workers by weirdo, Joel Rifkin. The moral of this story here kids... Don't be a bully. And if you are being bullied... maybe don't be a murderer! Kevin then tells the tale of a gay, narcissistic, alcoholic sociopath who felt like his one-night stand should have been a lifelong love affair. Like sir, you just met... When the well-known reporter in the gay community didn't reciprocate the odd "soul connection" with this dirtbag, all hell broke lose. Described as a gay murderer with a taste for more than a dingalong... or em' dingaling... this story will have you shook for days! Filled with BDSM, gay life in the 70's, a potential gay serial killer, and the general lack of police protection, the story of Paul Bateson will leave you speechless. Oh, and did we mention there is a weird tie-in with the 1973 hit movie, The Exorcist? Talk about your head spinning. Hopefully, this episode won't have you projectile vomiting! You actually only have to murder three people to be considered a serial killer. But today's killers? They're overachievers in the worst way possible. We're talking double-digit murders...😨 Kevin kicks us off by taking us to New Mexico... you know, The Land of Enchantment... or so they say. We've got a naked woman running through rural New Mexico, rushing into the open door of a trailer to save herself from "them." When we tell you this story is straight out of a nightmare... it will actually send a shiver down your spine. David Parker Ray might be the ugliest dude you've ever seen, but he also has a side kick with quite the name... (wait for it)... Cindy Hendy. Like, come on! I guess being the biggest losers New Mexico has ever seen pushed them to their breaking point because these killers created "Satan's Den." CONTENT WARNING: sexual mutilation, torture, rape Then, Brandon is telling us a tale of saliva + sorcery. And all we can say is... YUCK. Ahmad Suradji was a self-proclaimed Dukun (AKA Shaman) in Indonesia. For some reason, he thought he should take his dreams literally. What did his dreams entail? Oh, you know, just normal stuff... like, drinking the saliva of precisely 70 women. SCUSE ME? 🤮 Apparently, he thought to himself, "I couldn't possibly ask women to spit in a cup for my personal consumption... so, you know, I'll just murder them!" When a 24-year-old woman named Sri Kemala Dewi was discovered partially buried in a field, the true depth of Ahmad's crimes were revealed. Let's just say, this one ends in a firing squad. California girls ARE undeniable, fine, fresh, fierce, and they’ve got in on lock! But it seems like California men are a little bit (ahem... lottle bit) f$cked up. If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ve probably seen or heard Mardy in our recordings. She was the sweetest girl who loved to warm up our legs as we recorded. We had to put our true crime gabs on hold for a bit to give her all the attention she deserved for her last few weeks. So, this week’s episode is dedicated to our dear pup Mardy. Give your pets an extra squeeze today for us! Anyway, Mardy may not have been a California girl (she was a New Yorker through and through) but today’s victims were... well, kinda. Brandon is kicking us off with a story that involves multiple ransom notes. No, ransom is not just for pirates. And yes, this story is brutal so viewer discretion is advised! Marion Parker was kidnapped by Mr. Cooper after the school secretary allowed her to go home with a stranger. That’s unthinkable by today’s standards… because of stories like Marion’s. After sending multiple letters demanding the father pay up without involving law enforcement, Marion’s father was left with his daughter’s body... in pieces. Next, Kevin tells a story that hits close to home. Ashley Hall (Atherley) was a mother of two, great friend to many, including Kevin’s sister-in-law Britaney, and she dreamt of teaching history. Unfortunately, domestic abuse ultimately stripped her of her spirit. Ashley’s story shows the typical progression of domestic abuse. Starting by cutting her off from her family and friends and escalating to tragic heights. If you or someone you know is suffering under the hands of an abuser, Ashley’s family has actually created a resource to help victims escape violence. We're diggin' in real deep this episode with special guest, and TikTok's favorite online bestie, Luke Franchina! After some much needed fabulous gay banter, Kevin, Brandon and Luke dive deep into the stories of two women who took control of their destiny, after experiencing years of torture, manipulation, control, and abuse. Did they do the right thing? That is quite the question! Kevin’s starts us off with the story of Lavetta Langdon, a woman in her 80's who is currently sitting in a Nebraska state prison a convicted murderer. This one will break your heart for Lavetta, who truly does deserve to be back with her family. Her daughters are fabulous and we just want to give them all a huge hug! Brandon follows up with the story of Sarah Gonzales-McLinn, an 18-year old who spent much of her youth being manipulated and controlled by the very man who said he would protect her. A story written in blood - like literally written in blood, this one had us a bit stunned. A quick trigger warning, this episode contains stories of domestic violence, rape, and abuse. One thing we know about murder is that people will work with what they’ve got! It’s not all guns and knives, sometimes seemingly harmless everyday objects can be turned into a murder weapon. But unconventional weapons does add a layer of mystery and confusion to a case. And in some cases, inevitable puns and jokester headlines. But it’s not all shits and giggles… After today, you’ll never look at that piece of stale bread in your kitchen with the same eyes 👀. And your toilet seat? Watch that sneaky little biatch. Brandon is kicking us off with a story titled “Porcelain Rage.” Which immediately brings a porcelain doll to mind (cue those creepy ass stories of baby dolls killing people in their sleep), but it’s actually the porcelain you find in the bathroom. Christina Eubanks, a 28 year old woman from Tennessee, was suddenly targeted by her pizza guy/drug dealer. You might initially laugh at the fact that it was a toilet seat murder, but this is a gruesome story. Ultimately, it’s not funny at all and viewer discretion is advised. Kevin’s story on the other hand is the subject of laughs purely because we know so little about it that it’s borderline ridiculous. Reginald Hemsley-Doddingdale, a man with the most British name you’ve ever heard, was killed by a stale load of Pumperknickle bread. The translation of Pumperknickle? The Devil’s Fart.
