With economic uncertainty, evolving global trade dynamics, and potential new tariffs, businesses are facing heightened risks within their supply chains. These disruptions make it more critical than ever for risk managers to reassess and restructure their insurance programs. The discussion breaks down the three types of business interruption (BI) coverage—traditional BI, extended BI, and contingent BI—and emphasizes the growing relevance of contingent BI due to supplier volatility. As companies shift suppliers—onshoring or relocating to avoid tariffs—understanding and adapting to new exposures becomes essential for resilience. In this conversation, Scott Seaman of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, emphasizes that while legal risks around AI in insurance do exist, the bigger issue is ensuring that insurers lead with AI rather than react to it. He argues that strong AI capabilities — built and governed by knowledgeable professionals — are key to compliance and success in a transforming industry. Despite minimal federal regulation, the true risk lies in flawed implementation, poor oversight, and lack of human control. From underwriting to fraud detection to navigating social inflation, the strategic use of AI will define future industry leaders. Check out this highlight from the 2025 InsurTech Summit! On this installment we’re joined by Itai Ben-Zaken, founder and CEO of Honeycomb, an MGA with AI-driven technology to analyze aerial photographs of commercial building roofs to assess their condition. Honeycomb launched with admitted markets but recently expanded to E&S, opening up more opportunities for retail agents to place tough risks. For example, many carriers are active in multifamily property but carve out anything older than 25 years. With 80% of these structures built before 2000, that means 80% of the market is underserved, Itai says. Honeycomb’s “roof model” is hyper-specific, giving underwriters more confidence to take on risks even in troubled areas. Itai also comments on the broader state of insuretech. He sees an opportunity for innovators particularly in the environmental space. “If weather patterns are changing, the traditional insurance models are not accustomed to working with that.” This episode of Insurance Journal’s On Point podcast is sponsored by AM Best Information Services . As insurers struggle to assess the true value of highly sensitive assets—like century-old scientific samples stored in lab freezers—risk managers are using data-driven mapping to better quantify and communicate potential losses. This emerging trend is reshaping how insurers and clients think about high-value research spaces and what’s really at stake when the power goes out.
