Hilton Koppe was a beloved country GP for 30 years before an unexpected health crisis of his own forced him to reassess everything (R) Hilton Koppe grew up knowing his parents wanted him to become a doctor and so when he got the marks to make it into medicine, they were overjoyed. By the time he was 30, he'd started working as a country GP. Hilton then became a beloved local doctor in Northern NSW, and he worked there for more than three decades. But a few years ago, Hilton's own health suddenly went awry. He started experiencing constant neck pain, and then the side of his face went numb. He was sent him for an MRI, which revealed nothing. But then Hilton's own GP gave him an unexpected diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, related in part to his work as a doctor. This news up-ended almost everything about Hilton's life. Alexander Hauer und Michèl M. Almeida scheinen ein Faible für Wortspiele und Alliterationen zu haben, immerhin benannten sie ihre gemeinsame Band Mar Malade. Als solche gehen sie angemessen verspielt und gewitzt zu Werke, was die Musik betrifft. Zuletzt nachzuhören auf ihrer (nach zwei Alben 2021 und 2023) Ende Februar erschienenen EP "Fatamorgana": Zu Bewegung anregende Ohrwürmer wie der Titeltrack oder das nicht minder eingängige "Peaches" versetzen mit ihren Latin-Rhythmen das innere Ohr direkt in den einst von Wham! besungenen "Club Tropicana", während der ein wenig an Milky Chance erinnernde lakonische Gesang genau die richtige Dosis Melancholie beisteuert. "Musik für Momente, in denen Realität und Fantasie ineinander übergehen. Ein Lied, das nach Sommer klingt, nach einem süßen, kurzen Augenblick, den man immer wieder erleben möchte" findet sich hingegen der gelungenen Selbstbeschreibung nach in "Fruit Machine", während der akustische Bonustrack "Dreaming Of Animals Crossing" der Band zufolge "einen kleinen, intimen Vorausblick" darauf gibt, wohin die Reise von Mar Malade in der Zukunft gehen könnte. In der Gegenwart oder besser: ganz jungen Vergangenheit ist beziehungsweise war das Duo gerade auf großer Tour, die am 10. März in Nürnberg begann und nach erfolgreichen Gastspielen in unter anderem Wien, Stuttgart, Amsterdam, Hamburg sowie vielen Auftritten mehr am morgigen Freitag ihren großen Abschluss im Berliner Columbia Theater feiert.
