24:55Text “Do people even want to know about some of these issues? Because I think some of the meat production concerns, it's kind of like people would rather in some cases, I think some people might not really want to know all the nitty gritty. They don't want to know how the sausage is made. That poses an interesting question and challenge about how you communicate about some of these issues, when maybe there's a resistance among a subset of people who don't want to know more.” - Patti Truant Anderson This is the fourth episode in a special four-part series where we go deep into the food system with some of the brightest minds from Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, an interdisciplinary center based out of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. One of the reasons that we did this series is because we're about to enter another four years with the Trump administration; and last time, as we know, the Trump administration was pretty terrible for the food system in terms of climate, public health, worker safety, and of course, for the animals. This conversation is with Patty Truant Anderson. Patty is a senior program officer at the center. Part of her work at the Center focuses on public opinion polling around the food system. These polls can inform decisions by lawmakers. The great news is we're not nearly as polarized as it might seem. There is a lot of hope in the results. Episode Summary: In this enlightening episode of "This Side Up," Gerhard Odendal delves into the concept of identifying the true adversary in our spiritual journey. Contrary to popular belief, Gerhard emphasizes that the devil is not our primary problem. As believers, we have been given the mind of Christ, reconciled to God, and seated in heavenly places with Him. Gerhard encourages listeners to cast their cares upon Jesus and humble themselves by letting go of worldly concerns. He powerfully asserts that when we fully embrace God's perception of us, any image of the devil loses its grip on our lives. Key Takeaways: The devil is a defeated foe and not our main problem. Believers possess the mind of Christ and have been reconciled to God. We are seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Casting our cares upon Jesus and humbling ourselves is vital. Fully embracing God's view of us neutralizes the power of the devil. Reflection Questions: How does knowing that the devil is a defeated foe change your perspective on spiritual battles? What steps can you take to cast your cares upon Jesus more effectively? How can embracing God's view of you transform your daily life and struggles? In this thought-provoking episode of "This Side Up," host Gerhard Odendal delves deep into the heart of theological debate by challenging the Calvinistic theory of Penal Substitution. This widely held doctrine, which posits that Jesus Christ took on the punishment for humanity's sins to satisfy God's justice, has been a cornerstone of Reformed theology. Gerhard critically examines the historical roots and biblical foundations of Penal Substitution, questioning its implications on the nature of God's justice and mercy. By drawing on alternative theological perspectives, Gerhard invites listeners to explore a more nuanced understanding of atonement and redemption. Tune in for an enlightening discussion that encourages both reflection and dialogue on one of Christianity's most debated doctrines.…
Fully Satisfied. "Unwrapping Christ Within Us" Overview: In this inspiring episode, Gerhard Odendal delves into the profound understanding that our lives are gifts of joy meant to glorify God. He draws from personal experiences, biblical scriptures, and theological insights to explore how our deepest satisfaction aligns with glorifying God. Key Points Discussed: Life as a Gift: Gerhard begins by sharing a transformative moment at a revival meeting that led him to a deeper understanding of our purpose—to glorify God by enjoying Him forever, a principle echoed by theologians and revised by John Piper. God's Glory and Our Satisfaction: Gerhard discusses how traditional religious teachings often falsely dichotomize God’s glorification and human satisfaction. He emphasizes that these are not opposing forces but are complementary, with our true satisfaction found in God’s glorification. Scriptural Foundations: Key verses like John 15:7-8 and Psalm 37:4 are explored to illustrate that God is glorified when we are fruitful, which happens through our prayers being answered—linking our satisfaction directly to God’s glory. Practical Theology: The discussion shifts to practical implications, stressing that seeking God’s presence leads to the ultimate satisfaction of our desires, as God promises to give us not only what we ask for but also the desires themselves. Challenging Traditional Views: Addressing common misconceptions, Gerhard argues against the notion that Christians should shun material blessings. He insists that God's glory shines brightest when His followers live joyfully, receiving the desires of their hearts as a manifestation of God’s love. Self-Denial and the Cross: The episode concludes with an examination of self-denial, not as a renunciation of joy, but as embracing our identity in Christ's death and resurrection, which aligns our desires with God's will and glorifies Him. Show Notes for "This Side Up" Episode: Host: Gerhard Odendal Mentioned Scriptures: John 15:7-8, John 16:23, Psalm 37:4, Psalm 8, Jeremiah 2:13, John 7, Psalm 16:11, Psalm 36, Matthew 16, Colossians 3:3, Galatians 2:20, Romans 6:6 Theological References: Westminster Shorter Catechism, John Piper Key Themes: Joy, Satisfaction, God's Glory, Prayer, Biblical Promises Listeners are invited to reflect on their own lives as gifts and consider how their personal satisfaction in God’s promises reflects and glorifies God’s presence and love in their lives.…
