For 18 seasons, Mark Harmon portrayed Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, creating one of the most iconic characters in television history. So, when CBS decided to greenlight a prequel series, NCIS: Origins, exploring Gibbs’ backstory, the actor cast to play the younger Gibbs had enormous shoes to fill.

Austin Stowell ultimately landed the role, but not before intense speculation arose about whether he would emulate Harmon’s portrayal or forge his own path. Stowell said, that he didn’t have the opportunity to meet Harmon before his initial audition. Instead, he drew inspiration from the compelling scripts crafted by show creators Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North. He realized this wasn’t the Gibbs that NCIS fans had come to know.
