“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (From 1 Corinthians 13)

Talking about God and God’s love is meaningless if we don’t live it.

Send us a text “No, Lord,” Peter declared. “I have never eaten anything that our Jewish laws have declared impure and unclean.” But the voice spoke again: “Do not call something unclean if God has made it clean.” - Acts 10:14-15 Peter and many of the earliest Christians didn’t believe Gentiles could really be Christians unless they were willing to live under customs, traditions, laws, and understanding of Scripture that they already had. Peter’s vision showed him that God has other plans. Many Christians both over the centuries and today have the same mindset. They think these other folks aren’t really Christians if they don’t think, believe, and act as they do. This century’s Gentile Christians are LGBTQ Christians. Many Christians believe these folks must be excluded from the community. But God has other plans. Don’t call anyone unclean who God has made clean. Send us a text Give to Everyone: Stop Practicing Selective Compassion “Give to everyone who ask of you, and if anyone takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back again” - Luke 6:30 This verse comes from the middle of some of Jesus’s most challenging teachings. Jesus is challenging us to think, act, and react differently. The sequence ends with Jesus’s declaration that we will experience our highest level of wellbeing if we do. So why give to everyone? To avoid making ourselves the judge. To share the mercy, grace and forgiveness that we’d like to receive ourselves. It’s easy for us to help people who we feel deserve it… people in bad situations through no fault of their own. If we have any love in our hearts, it’s easy to help folk like this. But what about people who find themselves in bad situations largely because of their lack of character and judgment, because of their poor choices and bad habits? Our well of empathy for them tends to run dry. There are others who want to flip the table over and demand we play a different game. There are some who insist that everyone should have a chance to enter the race. There are others who go further and insist that everyone should at least have running shoes and get to start at the same time. Send us a text ‘If they can make penicillin out of mouldy bread, they can sure make something out of you.’ – Muhammad Ali Some of us listening to this or reading this right now are not in a good place. We’ve made mistakes and poor choices. We’ve sometimes acted in bad faith with a lack of discipline, integrity, and courage. Perhaps some of the good people in our lives have distanced themselves from us or walked away from us entirely. Perhaps the people we have surrounded ourselves with are just as broken and dysfunctional as we are. There is no human life that is beyond God’s redemption. None of us are too far gone. God works for the good in everything for those who love God and align themselves with God’s purposes and intentions. (Romans 8:28) The same love that saved the sinner hanging on the cross is available to us. The same power that raised Jesus from the grave lives in us. (Romans 8:11) It is this power that will transform us and eventually transform our circumstances. Certain doors may be closed and certain opportunities lost. But God offers new possibilities and purposes for us as God’s grace renews us daily. (Lamentations 3:22-23) Don’t give up on yourself. God hasn’t given up on you. I’m Horace McMillon. How might this world change? Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. (Ecclesiastes 9:10). If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.” - Oprah Winfrey The writer of Proverbs said that as a person thinks in their heart, so they are. (Proverbs 23:7). Even if a selfish, greedy person were to put on a lavish banquet, the meal would not be worth eating. There is no joy there. One of my favorite miracle stories is that of Jesus feeding the multitude. In the Gospel of John’s telling of the story, Jesus was concerned about the wellbeing of the crowd and wanted them to bit to eat in order to sustain them. He has the disciples ask the crowd if anyone had something they could share. Only one little boy offered up his lunch. Rather than complain about what he didn’t have and what others didn’t do, Jesus gave thanks for what he had and began to share with everyone. Then a miracle took place and the whole crowd had more than enough to eat. I don’t know if the miracle was God miraculously multiplying the food, or if the miracle was the change of heart the crowd had watching Jesus and the boy- causing everyone to share. Du Bois We are not called to be passive bystanders. Rather, Jesus called us to take up our cross and follow him. (Matthew 16:24). We are called to be active participants in building a better world. There’s no convenient time to make a sacrifice. That’s why it’s called a sacrifice. Our work may not be completed in a lifetime. Nevertheless, our work must begin and/or continue today. The Gospel of Mark (3:32-35) puts it this way: “A crowd was sitting around Jesus, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” Now is the time to do the work. Washington We do not start life with the same resources. Nor is everyone presented with the same opportunities along the way. We do not all have access to the same networks. Social capital isn’t easily quantified, but it counts far more than we usually like to think it does. So how do measure our success? It can’t be accurately measured by comparing ourselves to others. Our success can only be measured by the journey that we ourselves are making. What kind of obstacles are we overcoming? Are we making the most of the resources and opportunities that are currently available to us? Are we better versions of ourselves today than we were yesterday? How are growing?
