A HelpAge.org survey revealed that of people over the age of 60, 99% do not want to be evacuated from their homes. The survey also showed that an overwhelming amount, 91% need food assistance, 91% say their electricity is, eight out of ten lack access to sufficient clean drinking water. Three quarters need hygiene items, and one out of three urgently need medication for chronic illnesses.
HelpAge is responding to all of that and collaborating with partners, including Moldavia and Poland, to provide emergency food, water kits, medical and hygiene kits.
A word from CEO Cox-Roman:
“Older people need diapers. They need thermal blankets. They need support in response to trauma. We HelpAge doing all of that. If it is safe, volunteers deliver different items to people. Older people are housebound, have mobility issues, or fear leaving their homes. HelpAge has eighty refugee centers in Moldova, serving 6,000 to 8,000 more senior people in their families.”
