Have your ever been hangry, so hungry that you find it hard to even be kind to those around you? While we often think of our physical bodies experiencing hunger, rarely do we think about the spiritual hunger that screams within us to be satisfied. Our desire for justice, our longing for joy, our craving for peace, that overwhelming ache within our soul to be fully known and fully loved is spiritual hunger. All too often we think we can fill this hankering in our soul with things from this world: money, sex, relationships, family, power, security…but they are all broken cisterns, able to fill a little but ultimately leaving us feeling vapid and empty. In today’s text Jesus invites us to feast on the bread of life which is the only bread that will never leave us empty again.
