59:02Author Alan Byrne is a first-time guest. He has a new book on the late great Phil Lynott called Philip Lynott: Renegade . This is a brand new edition of the book originally released in 2012. It’s the story of the pioneering Irish musician, from his early days on his beloved Dublin music scene through the adventurous days of Thin Lizzy, the band he led for thirteen years. Once mainstream success came his way with Thin Lizzy's powerhouse Jailbreak album in 1976, his musical thirst only heightened, and this book also offers an intimate insight into his musical experimentation beyond the Thin Lizzy framework. From the slow burn of his rise with Thin Lizzy to the unfortunate and unnecessary outcome of his short life, Renegade offers a vantage point from the people who were by his side through it all. 43:04Author Robert Boyd is this episode’s guest. He is the author of Before the Storm: The Formative Years of America's Last Great Band . Late in the last century, deep in the Pacific Northwest amongst the economic and psychological hardships of one town, America's last great band was born - Nirvana. The band's leader, a young introvert with superior songwriting talents, slowly molded a style inspired by punk, metal, sludge, and pop. The results changed the band and the music industry forever. Before the Storm chronicles the birth of Nirvana in Aberdeen, Washington, and their early years as independent artists to worldwide superstars. The outcome is known, but the infancy of the band and its rise is a compelling lesson in tenacity, unity, the love of music, and sadly, tragedy. The second volume continues to paint the portrait of one of the world’s greatest musicians, his work post-Beatles, and his life from 1974 to 1980. By 1974 the Beatles were a distant memory, and Paul McCartney had already gone on to release a solo album and form a new band, Wings. By the decade's end, Wings would be the bestselling band of the 1970s. The McCartney Legacy, Vol. 2 begins in 1974 at the height of Wings' popularity and the beginning of McCartney’s next chapter. In this interview, Allan talks about the competitive relationship between Paul and John Lennon during this period, the Paul and John reunion project that wasn’t meant to be, the friction between Paul and Yoko, Paul’s near-death experience, his troubles with the law, his war with the music press, and much more. 1:10:50Fifty years ago, in the fall of 1974, Bon Scott and AC/DC joined forces. They began building the foundation for what would go on to become one of the world’s biggest rock and roll bands. With Bon, they reached the height of their commercial success thanks to the multi-platinum-selling 1979 album Highway To Hell. After Bon’s untimely death, Brian Johnson stepped in as lead singer, and with 1980’s Back In Black , the band was even bigger. The album topped the charts and went on to sell 27 million copies. It ranks as one of the biggest-selling albums in music history. Here to talk about the amazing story of AC/DC is author Susan Masino, who wrote the book Let There Be Rock: The Story Of AC/DC . Originally released in 2009, the updated edition was released through Omnibus Press in 2020. She is also the author of 2015’s AC/DC FAQ-All That’s Left to Know About the World’s True Rock and Roll Band . 1:01:15Don't care all that much for new music these days? You're not alone and our guest is going to explain why. On the podcast is author David Rowell. His book is titled The Endless Refrain: Memory, Nostalgia, and the Threat to New Music. The veteran music journalist argues that the rise of music streaming and the consolidation of digital platforms is decimating the musical landscape, with dire consequences for the future of our culture. In The Endless Refrain , Rowell lays out how commercial and cultural forces have laid waste to the cultural ecosystems that have produced decades of great American music. From the scorched-earth demonetizing of artist revenue accomplished by Spotify and its ilk to the rise of dead artists “touring” via hologram, Rowell examines how a perfect storm of conditions have drained our shared musical landscape of vitality. Combining personal memoir, intimate on-the-ground reporting, industry research, and cultural criticism, Rowell’s book is a powerful indictment of a music culture gone awry, driven by conformity and subverted by the ways the internet and media influence what we listen to and how we listen to it. For nearly 25 years David was an editor at The Washington Post Magazine and has taught literary journalism in the MFA department at American University. He is currently a senior editor at the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. His previous books include the novel The Train of Small Mercies, and Wherever the Sound Takes You: Heroics and Heartbreak in Music Making. Few bands in rock history have proven to be as enduring and influential as Led Zeppelin. And during the '80s, there was an overabundance of "Zeppelin disciples," or, as guitar great Gary Moore once put it, Led Clones. This is the first-ever book to tell the story about Zeppelin's immense influence on the bands and artists who came after them. I ask Greg about many of the bands and artists in the book. The ones who do Zep justice and those who didn’t. There are the obvious ones like Kingdom Come, Whitesnake, and Greta Van Fleet while there are others you may be surprised make the book.
