Boomers ou Millennials : les générations existent-elles ?

L’expression “ok boomer” est devenue à la mode en 2019 lorsqu’une jeune députée néo-zélandaise l’a utilisée pour faire taire un député plus âgé qui essayait de l’interrompre alors qu’elle parlait de l’urgence climatique. Les plus jeunes, eux, se font traiter de “millennials” ou se voient attribuer une lettre : générations x, y ou z. Et comme on a fini l’alphabet, on recommence au début : les enfants nés à partir de 2010 appartiennent à la génération “alpha”. Selon cette théorie des générations, l’année de naissance déterminerait largement le comportement, les valeurs et la psychologie des individus.

Pourtant, on peut croiser des personnes âgées passionnées de technologie ou engagées en faveur du climat comme on peut trouver des jeunes aux valeurs très traditionnelles.

Alors, les préjugés sur les baby boomers ou sur les jeunes qui ont grandi dans les années 1990 sont-ils justifiés ? Les générations existent-elles vraiment ? C’est la question du jour dans French Baratin !

Boomers or Millennials: do generations exist?

The expression "ok boomer" became fashionable in 2019 when a young New Zealand MP used it to silence an older MP who was trying to interrupt her as she spoke about the climate emergency. Younger people, on the other hand, are called "millennials" or assigned a letter: generations x, y or z. And since we've finished the alphabet, we start again at the beginning: children born from 2010 onwards belong to the "alpha" generation. According to this theory of generations, the year of birth largely determines an individual's behavior, values and psychology.

And yet, you can find older people with a passion for technology or a commitment to the climate, just as you can find young people with very traditional values.

So, are prejudices about baby boomers or young people who grew up in the 1990s justified? Do generations really exist? That's the question of the day in French Baratin!
