The Past has Passed

Imagine that you have to carry everything you own around with you in two suitcases. As you buy more stuff, they get heavier, and they fill up. So you buy a backpack, and then something else to sling over your shoulder. Eventually all that stuff drags you down so much that you can hardly breathe, let alone move forward.

Now if you’ve been able to join me these past few days, you’ll know that we’ve been talking rather a lot about leaving the past behind. Maybe you’re thinking … Why is he banging on so much about this?

Well, the reason I’m banging on about it is that leaving the past behind is perhaps one of the most difficult things we’ll ever have to do. So here, on this final day of the year, we’re going to give it one last push. But the hard work doesn’t belong to you. You don’t have to labour away at forgetting the hurts and healing your wounds.

Because that’s something that Jesus came, died and rose again to do for you. Are you ready?

2 Corinthians 5:17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (NRSV)

If you’re struggling to breathe under the burdens of your past, if you can’t imagine even summoning up the strength to step over the threshold of the new year, know this … the moment you put your trust in Jesus, you become a new creation. The past has passed away. Everything has become new. Jesus changes everything.
