James Helton and Wavery Guidry were two of Galveston's most well-known African American lifeguards who patrolled the beaches between 28th and 29th street in the early 20th century. Despite the racial segregation of the time, the pair dedicated themselves to the safety of their community and are responsible for numerous beachfront rescues. They are examples of Galvestonians fighting adversity and bringing safety and security to their community.
