“So much of the good stuff for me didn’t happen until after I turned 40— even though I pretty much had a mental breakdown,” says host Corinne Morahan, who, on this episode of Getting Organized for Good, talks about aging, both the good and the bad, the excitement for the future, and the wistful feeling that comes with acknowledging that a season of life has passed. There is room in the conversation for all the emotions now that discussing menopause, in particular, is no longer taboo. Today we’re talking about adjusting to the changes—to our bodies as well as our priorities—and how getting organized will help us make the most of the time ahead.

Middle and later age are a whole different ball game than they were even a generation ago—remember the Golden Girls? Women look younger and better longer and are embracing the life-changing benefits of hormone replacement therapy which was once considered a severe risk for cancer. What does all this mean for our libidos, our relationship with our spouses, our relationship with our children? Corinne shares her experience, her concerns, and the books and resources she’s found most helpful.

As strange as it may feel to suddenly be the oldest person in the room, with age comes wisdom and confidence. Stay tuned to the end of the episode to hear about the fabulous way Corinne celebrated her 44th birthday.

Quotes

  • “As you are nearing the midpoint of your life, and you think about all that you have accomplished, you are left thinking about the time that you have left and how you would like to spend it. And not in a morose sort of way, but in a ‘let’s take the bull by the horns, people,’ and actually go after what we want.” (3:31 | Corinne Morahan)
  • “The beautiful thing is menopause has become so much more recognized as something that, universally, women have to deal with, and it’s become a lot less taboo to talk about. And I think, on a superficial level, part of that is because women in our 40s and 50s who are going through menopause, we don’t look like old ladies.” (9:17 | Corinne Morahan)
  • “One of those action steps that was super controversial back when my mom was going through menopause, which has become a lot less—I was going to say less controversial, I don’t know if it’s controversial at all anymore—is hormone replacement therapy. Again, I have not personally explored this but I have several friends who are doing it, are on it, and are feeling incredible. So that’s something that I’m putting it in my back pocket to explore.” (12:27 | Corinne Morahan)
  • “There are seasons of our lives that have passed and we’ll never get back. And yes, there are amazing seasons that lay ahead of us, but I think, as much as I want us to be excited and look forward to that, I also want us to make room for any sadness that we feel about getting older and about being past seasons of our lives even if they were not the best and even if the better ones lay ahead.” (14:22 | Corinne Morahan)
  • “Let’s embrace the wisdom and freedom that comes only with age.” (17:29 | Corinne Morahan)
