God’s Word for Today 17 Jul, 2024 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” 11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. -Mark 11:7-11 ESV HOSANNA! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD! They brought the donkey to Jesus. They throw their cloaks on it before Jesus sits on it. This has prophetic symbolism [Zech 9:9]. Why He rides on a donkey not a horse. In that era, donkeys were exclusively used for work, whereas horses were more frequently used for war. Rather than entering the city on a horse, like a military conqueror, Jesus arrives on a donkey. This is somewhat like the difference between a modern person riding into town in the back of a pickup truck, as opposed to an armored personnel carrier. Take note, Jesus is going to finish His work at Calvary. As Jesus entered into the city, the people started praising God and laying their cloaks on the road and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. "Leafy branches" is from the Greek root word ‘stibas’ and can mean branches with leaves or rushes. Interestingly, John also mentions that the people used palm branches (John 12:13). But, palms are not native to Jerusalem. This implies the people brought them, on purpose and in advance, from Jericho. Everyone from behind and ahead is shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” Hosanna is a Hebrew term. It's a cry of praise or a prayer for salvation. To come "in the name of the Lord" is to come in God's authority, with His permission and purpose. These two phrases are each the first phrases of Psalm 118:25 and 26, respectively. This is known as the thanksgiving Psalm. The people are rightly celebrating that the Jewish Messiah has finally arrived. But, they are incorrect. They assume that His purpose is to rescue Israel from the Roman oppressors. Jesus is surrounded by a mob celebrating that He has come to re-establish the kingdom of David (Mark 11:10). Indeed, it's no exaggeration to say the triumphal entry has accelerated the plans to kill Jesus. The religious leaders are concerned and jealous since this event clearly established Him as a "problem" which would never go away. But far from what they expect, Jesus is not concerned for the Jewish crowd to be saved from Rome. But, He came to save them from their sins which will lead them to eternal damnation.
