God's Final Judgement

Today's sermon on Malachi 3:13-4:6 began with a question many of us might have contemplated before: “Why do the wicked prosper?” Unfortunately, we have put ourselves in the place of God, to insist that justice be done in the way we want, when it is actually we who have all been unfaithful to God, and are no less guilty before Him.

We learned that the book of Malachi ends with two promises, which are also warnings. Firstly, that God will vindicate the righteous, and secondly, that He will bring His ultimate judgement against the wicked. Without God’s compassion and mercy, we would all be condemned. Without Christ, we would not be saved. This is truly a wake up call!

Therefore, we must respond in urgency to this vision of God’s coming judgement. Only by allegiance to Jesus Christ, through faith in Him as Lord and Saviour, can we ever be right with God. Let us not test God’s patience, and trust in Him. Yet at the same time, we can look forward to Christ’s coming. He is akin to the rising sun, giving light to those in the shadow of death, and will restore all that is broken and disordered in our universe.
