A district court judge has set a June 2025 start date for the criminal trial of Bryan Kohberger, the suspect accused of the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students. The trial, anticipated to last three months, will take place in Latah County, where the killings occurred.
During a hearing on Thursday, both the defense and prosecuting attorneys agreed to the proposed trial schedule. Latah County District Judge John Judge detailed the timeline, noting that it includes two weeks for jury selection, eight weeks for the trial itself, and an additional two weeks for the verdict, sentencing, and any other remaining matters.
Kohberger, 29, is charged with allegedly breaking into the off-campus home of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, and Xana Kernodle, 20, in November 2022. He is accused of fatally stabbing the three roommates along with Ethan Chapin, 20, who was Kernodle's boyfriend and present in the house at the time of the murders.
At the time of his arrest in Pennsylvania, about six weeks after the students were killed, Kohberger was a teaching assistant and Ph.D. candidate in criminology at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. Pullman is a short drive from the University of Idaho campus in Moscow. Kohberger was extradited back to Idaho within weeks of his arrest and now faces charges including four counts of capital murder and one count of burglary.
The case has progressed slowly, with the recent scheduling hearing marking the first significant development in the legal proceedings for some time. Anne Taylor, Kohberger's public defender, reiterated that the defense does not support the trial being held in Latah County. Another hearing is set for August 29 to discuss a potential change of venue. Additionally, a deadline for the defense to file motions challenging the death penalty, which prosecutors are seeking, is set for September 5.
During an arraignment in May of the previous year, the judge entered not guilty pleas on Kohberger's behalf for all the charges brought against him. Kohberger appeared at the arraignment but did not respond when asked how he would plead.
Kohberger is currently being held without bond in Latah County.
