STORY 1: 2nd Annual Pickleball Tournament Deemed a Success

Last year’s Battle of the Paddles Pickleball Tournament, which pitted Commissioner Keli Gambrill’s team against Dr. Jatunn Gibson’s for Meals on Wheels, expanded this year to include all county departments. Held at Jim Miller Park, the event featured eight pickleball courts and aimed to foster inter-departmental relationships and boost morale. Keith Mazonkey from Human Resources and Jennifer Christoffersen shared how it was a chance to meet colleagues and improve teamwork. The tournament raised over $5,700 for Meals on Wheels, surpassing last year's total and helping feed 50 seniors. Positive feedback might lead to future expansions. Donations can still be made online until this Friday.

STORY 2: 1830s-era East Cobb Cabin Moved to Safety

The historic Power-Jackson Cabin, built in the 1830s, has been disassembled due to threats from development and deterioration. Originally located at 4701 Post Oak Tritt Road, it was donated to Cobb Landmarks and will be reassembled this fall at Hyde Farm Park, thanks to a $321,000 SPLOST fund allocation. The cabin, a key piece of Cobb County's early history, faced severe damage but is being meticulously moved with detailed documentation to facilitate reconstruction. The relocation, while necessary, is bittersweet for preservationists. The cabin's restoration will help preserve a rare example of early settler architecture in the region.

STORY 3: Embattled Cobb Superior Court Clerk Outraising Opponent

Cobb Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor, a Democrat, has raised nearly $20,600 for her reelection, double the amount raised by her Republican opponent Deborah Dance, who has gathered about $10,550, including a personal loan of $4,400. Taylor, who has faced controversy over her office's performance and handling of fees, has a substantial $14,200 remaining in her campaign fund. Dance has about $5,200 left after spending half of her raised funds. Despite past controversies, Taylor won 53% of the vote in the May primary against three challengers. The Superior Court is currently under a judicial emergency due to issues with Taylor's office, extending deadlines for legal actions.

STORY 4: Cobb to Consider Townhome Development off Veterans Memorial

The Cobb Planning Commission will review a proposal for a 42-unit townhome development on a 6.5-acre site at 1558 Veterans Memorial Highway. Developer Thomas Orok's plan includes two-story, for-sale townhomes ranging from 2,910 to 3,452 square feet, with three to four bedrooms and two-car garages. The project, which requires rezoning from commercial to residential, aims to serve as a transition between single-family homes and commercial areas. Originally scheduled for March, the case has been delayed several times and is now set for Tuesday’s meeting.

STORY 5: Vinings Man Drowns in Lake Lanier

Vinings resident Hasani Kamau Widemond, 46, drowned at Lake Lanier over the holiday weekend. Widemond was swimming from shore to his boat at Bethel Park when he disappeared under the water. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, and fire departments from Forsyth and Hall Counties responded. Widemond was located about 25 feet underwater using sonar and recovered by divers with the aid of Hall County Fire’s Remote Operated Vessel.

STORY 6: 'A Gem of a City': Popular History Book Returns to William Root House

Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society has reissued its popular 432-page book, "Marietta: The Gem City of Georgia," after a two-year hiatus. Written by Douglas Frey and originally published in 2010, the book explores 50 historic Marietta homes and their inhabitants, featuring around 300 color photos by Jim DiVitale. After selling out in 2022 and being sought after for high prices online, the book is now available again at the William Root House Museum and Garden gift shop. The reprint was made possible by a $10,000 donation. The book, which highlights Marietta’s architectural and historical charm, is priced at $100, or $80 with a Cobb Landmarks membership.

STORY 7: National Hunting and Fishing Day in Georgia

On September 28, Georgia will celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day with multiple free events across the state. This day, recognized by a recent proclamation from Gov. Brian Kemp, highlights the cultural and environmental significance of hunting and fishing. Established by Congress and President Nixon in 1972, NHF Day acknowledges the conservation contributions of sportsmen and women, who have raised over $57 billion for conservation efforts. Activities include family fishing events, Outdoor Adventure Days with archery and shooting, and a free fishing day where no licenses are required.
