Sind die Kinder zu guter Letzt immer weiser als ihre Eltern? Sind wir heutigen Menschen denn weiser als noch Generationen vor uns? Eine ähnliche Frage sei es, ob Goethe gegenüber Homer einen Fortschritt darstelle, sagt Michael Hampe. Die Weisheitstraditionen der Welt befinden sich aber nicht im Fortschrittsbusiness. Sie spielen keinen weltweiten Überbietungswettbewerb. Das macht ihre Erforschung auch so interessant für das METIS-Projekt. Denn beide folgen einer aufklärerischen Idee, wonach sich das Leben von Menschen nicht dadurch bessert, dass man in kämpferische Auseinandersetzung miteinander tritt, sondern aufeinander zu geht und von einander lernt. Weder dieses Aufklärungsverständnis, noch philosophische Weisheitstraditionen sind etwas genuin Europäisches. Daher muss auch eine Philosophie, die nicht mehr kolonialistisch daherkommen möchte, sich endlich den Philosophien der Welt öffnen.

In the end, are children always wiser than their parents? Are we today wiser than generations before us? A similar question is whether Goethe represents progress compared to Homer, says Michael Hampe. But the world's wisdom traditions are not in the progress business. They are not playing a worldwide competition to outdo each other. That's what makes their study so interesting for the METIS project. For both follow an enlightened idea according to which people's lives are not improved by entering into combative confrontations with each other, but rather by approaching each other and learning from each other. Neither this understanding of the Enlightenment nor philosophical wisdom traditions are genuinely European. Therefore, a philosophy that no longer wants to come across as colonialist must finally open itself to the philosophies of the world.
