There is magic in every beginning. Socrates is such a beginning for Western philosophy. Before him, too, there was philosophizing, but with Socrates, as we read in the historiography of philosophy, philosophical reflection takes on a different twist.
But this Socrates knew above all that he knew nothing...and then also in the most important questions of the life! We have asked Dorothea Frede, what makes this philosopher so special, that all thinkers before him were even subsumed under the term "pre-Socratics" and no following generation can get around this Athenian troublemaker.

Jedem Anfang wohnt ein Zauber inne. Sokrates ist ein solcher Anfang für die westliche Philosophie. Auch vor ihm wurde philosophiert, doch mit Sokrates, so lesen wir in der Philosophiegeschichtsschreibung, bekommt das philosophische Nachdenken einen anderen Drall.
Doch dieser Sokrates wusste doch vor allem, dass er nichts weiß...und dann auch noch in den wichtigsten Fragen des Lebens! Wir haben Dorothea Frede gefragt, was diesen Philosophen so besonders macht, dass man gar alle Denker vor ihm unter den Begriff "Vorsokratiker" fasste und keine folgende Generation mehr um diesen athenischen Störenfried herumkommt.
