What is the gospel? This week Brian Barr kicked off a new sermon series through the book of Mark in the Bible. Mark is an eyewitness account of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. It was written specifically to Christians who were suffering in Rome under the persecution of Nero. Mark begins by announcing the purpose of his book - to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The gospel is the good news about Jesus - that the Son of God Himself has come in the flesh to rescue His people. The whole book challenges the reader to make a decision about who you think Jesus is. Is He a good moral teacher? Is He a prophet? Is He an example of how we should live? Or will you, the reader, recognize that He really is the divine Son of God who can control the wind and waves, who can forgive sins, and who suffered and died to rescue His people?
