The Creator is a 2023 American science fiction film produced and directed by Gareth Edwards, who co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Weitz. The film stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney, and Madeleine Yuna Voyles (in her film debut). Set in 2055 after a nuclear detonation in Los Angeles and a war against artificial intelligence, an ex-special forces agent is recruited to hunt down and kill the "Creator", who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war. Development began in November 2019 when Edwards signed on to direct and write an untitled science fiction project for New Regency and was officially announced in February 2020. Filming began on January 17, 2022 and wrapped on May 30, 2022. The Creator was released in the United States on September 29, 2023, by 20th Century Studios. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the direction by Edwards, ambitious visuals, production value, and worldbuilding with criticism being directed at the screenplay. The film grossed $79 million worldwide on a budget of $80 million
