No-one really talks about death or prepares for it. Is this why booze is so prevalent at wakes and funerals?

The way us humans deal with death doesn't seem to evolve. You put on a black outfit, grab a sarnie and a tissue, then, generally, everyone gets totally shitfaced. Then you accidentally offend the grieving widow, fall down some stairs, get thrown out of a pub and stumble home singing 'Oh Danny Boy.' Then, after the wake you have to deal with a hangover on top of all those difficult feelings. It's an emotional mess.

Booze doesn't help. It prolongs the mourning period and makes recovery from the death of a loved one a lot more painful. So, why do we do it?

Unfortunately death is something all us sober folks will face at some stage. Death is part of life, we will lose people. So, how do you handle it as a sober person? Should you even go and risk your sobriety or are there other ways that you can remember someone without getting three sheets to the wind - blotto.

On Sober Awkward we like to talk about the hard stuff, (not whiskey!) plan for unexpected situations and confront emotions (and talk a little bit too much about Hamish's sheep fetish - say no more.) but we hope by digging deep into the more difficult aspects of life, we can help you feel stronger in your sobriety and help you approach the death of a loved-one without the risk of relapse

So why are funerals and wake so boozy? Is it ok not to go? and how would the person that dies feel if you said not to raising a glass at their send off?

Find out in this slightly more serious episode of Sober Awkward.
