Southern Oddities

Chillicothe is a city in the state of Missouri with a small population of just over 9,000 people. The name "Chillicothe" is Shawnee for "big town", From 1865 to 1870, the city improved rapidly, then a lull lasted until 1875, when the erection of the beautiful three-story, $36,000 school building was started, now known as "Middle School." From that time on Chillicothe made a slow, steady growth up to 1886, when the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad were built through town. That same year also saw the introduction of the "Water Works" and electric lights. The city continued to modernize in the early 20th century, and one of those modernizations, is an invention that still produces a commodity today, Sliced Bread.
