No. 5 Ole Miss looks for Win No. 4 against a capable, 2-1 Georgia Southern on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.
The Eagles are the best team Ole Miss has played so far — the first of four Ole Miss storylines I see as either trending or ending with kickoff around the corner.
ENDING is Ole Miss’ preseason concerns about its running back room. TRENDING is Tennessee being wish-casted into the role these Rebels are already playing.
Ole Miss is No. 2 nationally and leads the SEC in explosive plays (20 yards or more). Star wide receiver Tre Harris is tied or first in the country for most receptions of 15-plus yards. He’s got 13.
Ole Miss is one of three teams in the country that hasn’t allowed a touchdown this season. The others are Ohio State and Georgia. Ole Miss has the highest-graded defense (92.8) in football, according to Pro Football Focus. Ole Miss is No. 1 in the nation in defensive rushing efficiency. The Rebels haven’t allowed a touchdown through three games for the first time since 1961.
Tennessee is really good. But the same criticisms Ole Miss is getting — the Rebels haven't played anybody, etc. — aren’t being equally applied to the Volunteers.
I’m just saying, national-media types: Save some of that Tennessee energy for Ole Miss, even though for a lot of you it’s probably really hard, seeing as you tried to bury the Rebels in 2016 and yet here they are, title-chasing not even 10 years later.
