We are following a golden thread through history. This shiny metal has motivated wars, justified conquests, spurred exploration, inspired artistic masterpieces, invoked religious reverence and yielded scientific discoveries. And um... most of all gold gives us the most enduring, iconic forms of jewelry of all time.
For this fourth and final episode in the Casual History of Gold series, I wanted to look at gold’s involvement in history a bit closer to home… my home continent of North America, and my country, the United States of America. What part did gold play in helping the USA become a country stretching “for sea to shining sea”? What thanks do we owe to gold for the multi-cultural melting pot nature of our nation? And is gold the answer to any economic problem… or the cause?
I also offer up my final conclusion thoughts on the eternal connection of gold to the human experience.
