She has designed more than 30 musicals and plays; favorites include A Little Night Music; Hello, Dolly; Evita; The Producers; Paint Your Wagon; South Pacific; Spamalot; the Diary of Anne Frank and Blithe Spirit. This podcast was recorded on the show floor of USITT22 at Studio USITT in partnership with AKG by Harman. On this week’s episode, we sat down with 2022 YDMT winner of the USITT Scene Design Award Sponsored by Rose Brand, Kevin Lee McBee. We chatted about his work on and off the traditional stage, both in theme parks and museums, as well as his design inspirations and industry passions More about Kevin: My name is Kevin Lee McBee and I am a story-focused designer with a passion for theater, film and long form television. I was born in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up in the green, leafy humidity of North Carolina. My parents lovingly tolerated their strange son and provided all the art supplies I could get my grubby hands around. My previous work ranges from rebranding cultural institutions to writing, designing, and art directing experiences in theme parks and museums. I attended UNCSA’s School of Design and Production and received my MFA in Scenic Design in 2021. I currently live and work in Los Angeles as a Scenic and Set Designer and can, more often than not, be found drinking coffee or filling up a sketchbook one page at a time - or on my motorcycle headed somewhere to do both at once. I firmly believe that design is both lens and mirror - a way to better understand the world, the self, and those within it. And a world without design and art is all the poorer for it. This week's episode focuses on something the industry has become quite familiar with over the past year — virtual production. We were joined by actor, writer, director, producer, and virtual production aficionado Brendan Bradley who spoke with us about his work on A One Act Festival in your Browser (WebXR) — a show produced, rehearsed, and performed entirely in web-based virtual reality, demonstrating several different modes and styles of fully-immersive, virtual performance with a customized toolkit, and user interface. Brendan established his own lab at New York University for integrating emerging technologies in live performance and supporting the next generation of multi-disciplinary storytellers. During the pandemic, he began releasing free tutorials and case-studies for live performance artists to stream their work from home, including a customizable virtual theatre that allows anyone in the world to perform for their own live, virtual audience for free. Today we’re on the line with father-and-son duo John and Tyler DeLong of DeLong Rigging Solutions. Tyler and John are both ETCP certified Riggers who have extensive experience working in the live entertainment industry. Their company, DeLong Rigging Solutions, is a product of a great idea, a widespread industry need, and the pandemic. Tyler, like many other individuals in the entertainment industry, found himself suddenly without employment in the spring of 2020 due to Covid-19. Through his searches for the next project, he had the realization that there was a need in the entertainment industry for qualified and experienced rigging experts to inspect rigging systems and advise on best practices. Thus he started A Man, A Jeep, No Real Plan LLC to investigate this niche. Very quickly he realized that this need was larger than what he originally thought and he recruited his father, John DeLong as a partner and DeLong Rigging Solutions was born. Dashiell is currently a Technical Designer at Showman fabricators in New Jersey where he does Technical design and construction drafting across the spectrum of the entertainment industry. There he works with a team of Technical Designers, Project Managers, and Lead Carpenters to realize theater, film, and TV studio sets, retail displays, and art installations for a variety of clients. Dashiell believes that Theater is storytelling, and all of us should be working together towards the goal of telling a story. He says the tremendous array of skills necessary to execute a modern theatrical performance means that no one person can do every job required to tell that story, and when it works right is a truly beautiful thing to be a part of.
