Acts 3:12 “People of Israel,” he said, “What is so surprising about this? And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power and godliness?
Today, we often marvel at the impressive accomplishments of humankind. We build towering skyscrapers, drive fast cars, and create beautiful and luxurious homes. However, sometimes we become so enraptured by the pleasures of this world that we become drunken on them, staring at pornographic images and videos on our computer screens. We even celebrate when a young boy defeats young girls in a sporting event, forgetting the value of fairness and equity. And all too often, we worship the politicians, billionaires, celebrities, and entertainers who seem to possess godlike power, forgetting the true source of all power and goodness. These individuals may be capable of moving society in whichever direction they choose, but we must remember that the power of God landed on earth 2000 years ago, when a man named Jesus broke the chains that enslaved the hearts and minds of people from the grips of Satan. And that power is still alive today, available to guide and free us from the temptations and distractions of this world.
And here is a prayer for guidance:
Dear God, we come to you seeking guidance and wisdom. In a world that so often values power, pleasure, and prestige above all else, help us to remember the true source of all power and goodness. Help us to recognize the temptations and distractions that can lead us astray, and to turn our hearts and minds towards you. Guide us on the path of righteousness, that we may find true fulfillment and joy in your love. We ask for your strength to resist the allure of the world and to cling to your light. May we follow in the footsteps of your son, Jesus, and find freedom from the chains of sin and darkness. In his name we pray, Amen.
