February 8th, 2021 | The Hockey Betting Podcast
It may be hangover Monday for football fans - and, for once, the NFL's referees are getting more grief than officials on the ice - but Cam knows the cure for seven Jager bombs, eight rum and cokes, and 17 beers is of course Tampa Bay and the under. On this episode, it’s another crazy day of regular season NHL betting for Brian Blessing and Cam Stewart as they preview the odds for games on Tuesday, February 9, and Wednesday, February 10, 2021. And be ready, because Cam has a bone to pick about teams not announcing goalies in advance, and Brian is coming at you with more angles than a geometry teacher. Listen to this episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast to get all of Brian and Cam’s NHL betting tips, free picks and laughs.
Monday, February 8, 2021 NHL Betting Lines, Analysis
Programming note: Today’s episode was published later than typical and does not cover Monday’s games.
Monday's NHL action included a number of tightly-handicapped faceoffs and only a few bold puck lines on the betting board. Two-loss Carolina went into a rematch with Columbus as a (-140) favorite after a drama-filled 6-5 win on Saturday, but the 'Canes fell 3-2. The Isles and Rangers went into a cross-town contest as near EVEN-odds opponents, with the New York Islanders winning 2-0 behind Semyon Varlamov's shut-out. A series of fights overshadowed Leon Draisaitl's two points and steadied the pace of an easy O/U winner as Edmonton beat Ottawa 3-1. Brian and Cam turn into boxing analysts and heap on the (Bert) sugar, prognosticating on players' pugilistic skills in case the next Senators-Oilers engagement gets physical.
Puck line bets on the victorious Toronto Maple Leafs only paid (+105) thanks to Vancouver's frustrations in the series. Cam thinks the Leafs were out-played in the second game and a candidate for "fading," or looking to wager on a club's upcoming opponents. Brian dishes on Vancouver's goaltending, comparing the Canucks' plight to the Carson Wentz debacle in Philadelphia.
Tuesday, February 9, 2021 NHL Betting Lines, Picks
Philadelphia Flyers -120, o6 at Washington Capitals
Tuesday night's lines on the pond include Philly's (-122) odds to beat Washington, as the host Capitals try to snap a three-game skid. Cam loves Washington's markets and calls Philadelphia "smoke and mirrors." The boys agree that NHL lines are getting mis-priced by distracted bookies, such as the Islanders' (-120) odds for Monday's low-stress win. Cam thinks the price is right on Calgary to beat Winnipeg. Listen to this episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast for Cam and Brian’s loose line discussion.
Edmonton Oilers at Ottawa Senators
Bookmakers are giving "plus" payoff odds on Under (6.5) for Ottawa vs Edmonton, though Cam thinks Connor McDavid and the Oilers are in trouble against the Senators, who deserved more points out of Monday's hard-luck battle. Cam likes Ottawa's Puck Line but cautions of a potential bad beat on an empty-net goal.
Detroit Red Wings at Florida Panthers -225, o5.5
The Florida Panthers are a 1-to-2.25 favorite to beat hapless Detroit, even though the Red Wings surprised the Cats 4-1 on Sunday behind a 36-save performance from German netminder Thomas Greiss. Listen to this episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast to hear the guys’ picks on this game.
Anaheim Ducks at Las Vegas Golden Knights -240, 5.5
Sin City is skeptical of its home team against lowly Anaheim on Tuesday, widening a 1-to-2.5 opening consensus on the Golden Knights to a (-244) moneyline with early bets. Flower's presence in goal for the Knights causes Brian to lean under, but Cam says the Ducks are a smart small-units wager despite the club's COVID-19 issues.
Winnipeg Jets at Calgary Flames -137, u6
Listen to this episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast to hear the guys' predictions on the game between the Jets and the Flames.
Wednesday, February 10, 2021 NHL Betting Lines, Picks
Boston Bruins -148, u6.5 at New York Rangers
Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens
Cam thinks Wednesday's Maple Leafs-Canadians contest will be a "Pick'em," or evenly-handicapped game at the betting counter. And will the New York Rangers benefit from home ice, recent momentum, or a leisurely pace of just two faceoffs in the previous eight days to challenge Boston, or will Brad Marchand and the superior Bruins cover easily for puck line gamblers? Listen to this episode of The Hockey Betting Podcast to hear all of Brian and Cam’s leans, tips and picks.
Cam says he feels a Stars-Capitals parlay "is happening." There's much juice in 50/50 markets to go with a total or a puck line pick. Meanwhile, Brian is looking at Los Angeles and Anaheim to go over (5.5) goals, reasoning that Anze Kopitar can do everything but check for the potent-yet-porous Kings.
Brian does not give his blessing to a season in which some NHL divisions are stronger than others, turning the 2021 covid season into "asterisk city." Live results impede the pair's league-wide overview as Arizona stuns St. Louis with a late equalizer, and the game's ticky-tack penalty calls cause Cam to explode in disgust.
The duo recaps Super Bowl 55, complaining that Tom Brady receives too many "sentimental" MVP awards. But unless The Rock gets the XFL cooking, late winter is still a great time to set pigskin aside and settle in for the NHL's stretch run. Listen to this episode and get the experts' scoop from Brian and Cam as usual plus more with a post-Super Bowl Sunday version of The Hockey Betting Podcast.
