And sites that have helped me find better options when I was escaping Google. These platforms and/or protocols don’t follow the same perspective and should be seen as better, more specific spaces rather than competition. Some will be classified as a protocol. Some will be classified as platforms. It is not super important that you understand it at the core level, but that you know the difference. In plain English, a platform is like Twitter or Facebook. A protocol is like a set of rules that are baked into the code. Like e-mail is a protocol, in its nature it is decentralized; e-mail works cross-platform. You can e-mail gmail to proton, etc., and you have your own domain, so you gain much more control. Another good reason why protocols are better is that they are more resilient. Each app will have links and documents to more information. Whether you decied to use protocol or platform it is up to you. Not everything has to be black and white.
