The Myth of Loud Confidence Why is it that the loudest person in the room is rarely the most confident? We often equate confidence with certainty—believing that the person who speaks the loudest or most assertively must know what they’re talking about. But in reality, true confidence isn’t about proving you’re right. It’s about understanding that you don’t always have to be. Confidence and humility are often framed as opposites, but they are actually two sides of the same coin. While society tends to associate confidence with being outspoken, real confidence is about knowing your worth, even when you admit you don’t have all the answers. Redefining Humility Humility is not about making yourself small or hiding your greatness. Instead, it is the full awareness of your abilities and the conscious decision to use them only when necessary. “Humility is not the hiding of your greatness. It is the full awareness of everything that makes you great—and the ability to consciously choose when you will or will not use it.” For years, I believed confidence meant always having an answer, always speaking first, and always proving a point. But the older I get, the more I realize that the people I respect the most aren’t those who are always right. Instead, they are the ones most willing to say, “I don’t know.” Confidence isn’t about never being wrong. It’s about knowing that being wrong doesn’t change your worth. A Personal Story of Change A year and a half ago, I was visiting some long-time friends in Los Angeles. As we were sitting around talking, one of them stopped me mid-conversation and asked, “Why aren’t you taking the bait?” Confused, I asked what they meant. They explained that they had been intentionally making provocative comments—ones they knew I would normally challenge in the past. But this time, I hadn’t reacted. Instead, I had simply listened. At first, their observation caught me off guard. I had always been the one to argue, to prove a point, to jump into a debate. But something had shifted in me. I realized that my confidence was no longer tied to proving myself right. Instead, it was about being secure enough to truly listen. I didn’t need to “win” the conversation. I needed to understand it. The Cost of False Confidence There’s a hidden cost to false confidence—the kind that is rooted in ego rather than truth. In workplaces and leadership, this can manifest in several ways: A culture where no one speaks up out of fear of challenging the “confident” person. Decisions made based on volume and authority rather than wisdom and collaboration. A lack of trust in leadership because no one admits when they’re wrong. Many leaders struggle to acknowledge their mistakes because they fear it will make them appear weak or incompetent. But in reality, the most trusted leaders are those who own their failures and invite others into the problem-solving process. Collaborative Leadership True confidence in leadership isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about creating an environment where better answers can emerge through collaboration. One organization I’ve seen do this well is Zillow. I’ve been in meetings, retreats, and discussions with their team, and I rarely see leaders operate with an “I’m always right” mentality. Instead, they foster an environment where ideas are openly shared, challenged, and refined. When leadership is built on collaboration rather than control, the result is not just a stronger team, but a more innovative and effective one. Practicing Humble Confidence If you want to develop a confidence that is secure rather than loud, here are a few practices to try: Say “I don’t know” more often. It doesn’t make you incompetent—it makes you real. Ask more questions. Instead of proving a point, seek to understand someone else’s. Pay attention to your volume. Are you speaking to be heard, or to contribute meaningfully? Reflect on your motivations. Are you holding onto a belief because it’s true, or because you don’t want to admit you might be wrong? The loudest person in the room isn’t always the most confident. More often, they are the most insecure. The real test of confidence is whether you can acknowledge when you don’t know something—and whether you can invite other people’s opinions even when you do know something. Confidence isn’t about defending yourself. It’s about being secure enough that you don’t need to defend anything. If you find yourself resisting change, ask yourself: Am I speaking to prove something, or to learn something? Am I holding onto my position because it’s true, or because I don’t want to be seen as wrong? Is my ego getting in the way of truth? Challenge yourself this week to practice humility. Instead of leading with certainty, lead with curiosity. Instead of striving to be right, strive to understand. These two truths often feel like they exist in opposition, but if we can hold them together, we might just find the clarity we've been searching for. The Conflict Between Personal Conviction and Professional Ambition Ambition isn’t the problem, but the way we chase it can be. Many of us separate our work life and personal life, believing that we must choose between professional success and personal values. This mindset turns ambition into a crisis—an identity conflict where we question whether we should pursue greatness or stay rooted in our personal beliefs. The key isn’t balancing ambition and conviction but finding their intersection. When ambition is unanchored, it leads to burnout. When conviction is too rigid, it can hold us back from necessary growth. The challenge is discovering how they can coexist. Personal Experiences and Struggles For most of my life, I struggled to balance being a husband, father, business owner, and individual all at once. I feared success more than failure because I was afraid of what success might turn me into. I had never seen a man successfully build a thriving business while being fully present for his family and community. Every example I had of success seemed to come at the cost of relationships. That fear made me resist ambition, even when it aligned with my convictions. Many of us spend so much time trying not to be something that we forget to step fully into who we’re meant to be. Instead of pushing toward a personal vision, we get stuck running away from a fear. Redefining Work-Life Balance The phrase "work-life balance" can be misleading. Instead of balance, what if we embraced work-life tension? Rather than dividing life into "work" and "personal," what if we simply called it life? The goal isn’t to force an equal split but to integrate ambition and conviction in a way that feels sustainable and meaningful. One of the biggest questions I’ve had to ask myself is: Does my fear of failure impact how I see success? Am I resisting ambition because I think it will change me? Am I running toward something or just running away from something? The tension between ambition and conviction isn’t something to fight—it’s something to hold. The Role of Leadership and Organizational Culture I see this struggle in business all the time, particularly in leadership roles. Many leaders believe they must always be: The first one in and the last one out. The one who always works late to prove dedication. The one who takes full responsibility for the team's success or failure. While these habits can be beneficial, they are not sustainable unless rooted in clarity. A great leader sets clear boundaries, knowing that: Presence and ambition are not mutually exclusive. Success doesn’t have to come at the cost of personal well-being. A culture of balance leads to more effective long-term results. Companies that thrive are the ones that hold ambition in one hand and conviction in the other, allowing their people to operate in the tension between the two. Finding Clarity in Ambition and Conviction Ambition doesn’t have to control us—it needs to be redefined. The goal isn’t balance—it’s clarity. The goal isn’t work-life separation—it’s work-life integration. The goal isn’t choosing conviction or ambition—it’s allowing both to exist together. Ask yourself: Where am I allowing ambition to overshadow conviction? Where am I letting conviction hold me back from necessary ambition? Am I pursuing ambition out of a genuine desire, or am I afraid of failure? Ambition isn’t dangerous when held with conviction. Conviction and curiosity seem like opposites, but I believe our strongest convictions often come from moments of deep curiosity. Real clarity happens when I allow these two truths to exist together. Personal Experiences and Lessons Learned When I assume I already know, when I only talk to myself, or when I surround myself with people who think like me—I end up wrong. I've learned this lesson most often in marriage, parenting, and business. When I hold onto my beliefs too tightly without curiosity, I miss out on better solutions. Conviction and Curiosity in Relationships I’ve seen this play out in my marriage. My default is to assume I’m right , but every time I make space for curiosity, the outcome is better. If I want stronger relationships, I have to balance standing firm in my values with being open to learning from others. Identity and the Need to Be Right If I’m being honest, my need to be right is often about something deeper. Sometimes, I fear that if I’m wrong , I’ll be seen as weak, unworthy, or unlovable. Am I chasing rightness because I believe it equals security? Conviction and Curiosity in Business I recently coached a high-level sales leader who struggles between confidence and asking for help. She fears that if she asks for help, she’ll look weak—but if she doesn’t, she risks burnout. True leadership isn’t about knowing everything —it’s about being confident in my abilities while also staying open to learning. The Importance of Curiosity in Innovation Innovation depends on curiosity. When a company is clear on its mission, vision, and values (conviction), it can still adapt and grow (curiosity). I’ve seen organizations thrive when they get this balance right. Practical Steps to Embrace Curiosity Instead of asking “Am I right?” I now ask “What do I not know?” I try to ask more questions than I give answers.
