There’s more here than “greets” that eye. Welcoming travelers aboard a plane might seem like a polite courtesy, but there’s another reason flight attendants greet people with a smile: to size them up. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Friday, Patrick Bertoletti gobbled up 58 hot dogs to win his first men’s title at the annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, taking advantage of the absence of the event’s biggest star. In the women’s competition, defending champion Miki Sudo won her 10th title and set a new world record by downing 51 links. When the sun went down, New York City’s skyline lit up red, white and blue for the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks — but this year, the West Side of Manhattan got the best seats in the house. A drunk driver allegedly mowed down 10 people — killing three — who were celebrating the Fourth of July on the Lower East Side, cops and police sources said. And Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Mexico’s coast near the resort of Tulum as a Category 2 storm, whipping trees and knocking out power as it came ashore after leaving a trail of destruction across the eastern Caribbean.
